After several weeks of speculation, Google presented Bardhis own artificial intelligence (AI) based chatbot. This new conversational search engine would be the direct (and strongest) rival of ChatGPTthe star tool of Open AI.
Since ChatGPT was officially launched on November 30, 2022, it has captivated specialists and users alike. Even Microsoft recently invested close to 10,000 million dollars to integrate ChatGPT to its browser Bing. Its artificial intelligence system is capable of generating coherent and natural texts, which are difficult to distinguish from content written by humans.
In response, Google introduced Bard, “an experimental conversational artificial intelligence service.” That is, your own AI-based text generation and search tool.
“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our great language models. It relies on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality answers,” explained Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, announcing the tool on Twitter.
LaMDA, the “sentient” AI, is also the key to Google Bard
Developed in 2017, LaMDA stands for ‘Language Model for Dialogue Applications’O well, ‘Language model for dialog applications’, in Spanish. It is a technology based on neural networks, trained to process large amounts of data and text. This allows you to generate fluid and dynamic responses with natural language.
LamDA rose to fame in June 2022, when a Google engineer named Blake Lemoine He assured that this AI would have become aware of itself and “is capable of expressing feelings and thoughts”, as collected The Verge. In response, the tech giant immediately denied the information, and shortly thereafter it emerged that the whistleblower who “spoke too much” was fired.
They began testing LaMDA last September, and Google eventually found a good use for the controversial language model: creating its conversational robot.
Bard could unseat ChatGPT and revolutionize Internet searches
Apparently, Google Bard will work very similar to ChatGPT, but with one BIG difference: would be integrated into the resources of the Google Search engine.
Chat GPT still has a limitation: it does not feed on real-time information from the Internet. Their answers are based on data and information prior to 2021, processed using machine learning and other AI tools.
For its part, the Google search engine has been operating more or less in the same way for more than two decades. Users enter a question, phrase, keywords or image, and find countless links that take them to the information they are looking for (almost always). Instead, ChatGPT offers them in the form of well-selected, digested and written texts for easy reading.
At this point, the most logical step is combine the capabilities of LaMDA with the resources of Google Searchthe company confirmed. In addition to implementing searches and results with natural language, Bard will use information from the Internet, updated and in real timeto provide high-quality responses.
“Soon, you will see AI-powered features in the search engine that will extract complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more about the web,” Sundar Pichai said in a statement.
The Google CEO added that Google Bard is available today to a small group of external ‘trusted testers’ and will be available to the public “in the coming weeks”.
