The Prerelease format allows players to compete with a 40-card deck, with four separate Prize cards at the start of the game, instead of a 60-card deck with six Prize cards. Not only is this format perfect for introducing new players to the exciting world of the Pokémon Trading Card Game with fast, fun playthroughs, but it also allows more experienced players to discover a little of all that Lost Origins has to offer.
Each Build & Battle box contains a ready-to-play 40-card deck, featuring several key cards from this and previous expansions, plus one of four exclusive foil promo cards to boost your deck. Depending on which promo card you get, you’ll have the opportunity to add the ever-creepy Gengar, the muscular Machamp, the great swimmer Finneon, or the flowery Comfey to your deck and collection.
Finneon (SWSH240)
If you come across this promo card in your Build & Battle box, you may want to follow the same river to find Pokémon with the Free Swim attack. Normally, you can only attach one Energy card per turn, but Finneon’s Ocean Companion Ability allows you to attach as many Water Energy cards as you want during your turn from your hand to one of your Pokémon that has the Free Swim attack.
If you manage to get Dewgong into play, you’ll be able to shower your opponents with the powerful Iceberg Return attack, which puts any amount of Water Energy from your Pokémon into your deck, as well as dealing 40 damage for each card you’ve put into your deck. shuffle this way.
Gengar (SWSH241)
Gengar is a very elusive Pokémon that, with its Portal to Other World Ability, can get down to business in the blink of an eye. Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in your discard pile, you may put it onto your Bench. If you do, put three damage counters on Gengar.
Most Stage 2 Pokémon need to evolve a few times before they can enter play, but Gengar doesn’t follow this idea, and can even re-enter play after being Knocked Out! In addition to this ability, Gengar’s Circle of Screams attack can come in handy and do massive amounts of damage for the cost of just one Energy.
Comfey (SWSH242)
Comfey loves taking flowers, because it’s the Flower Picker Pokémon for a reason. Plus, she also loves picking cards off the top of your deck with her Flower Pick ability. Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, you may look at the top two cards of your deck and put one of them into your hand and the other card into the Lost Zone.
Comfey doesn’t have a beastly attack, but it helps you find the cards you need when you need them most, making it a powerful card for the Prerelease format, which tends to have fewer Supporter and Item cards. Be careful though, you don’t want to send too many cards into the Lost Zone without having a clear path to victory before you run out of cards.
Machamp (SWSH243)
The Super Power Pokémon, Machamp, puts on the muscle with its Muscle Crisis ability! This Pokémon uses the number of your opponent’s Prize cards to gain an additional 150 HP when your opponent has three or fewer Prize cards remaining.
Since the Prerelease format only uses four Prize cards, this ability can be activated in no time! As a Stage 2 Pokémon, Machamp takes a bit longer to prepare, but it will reward you with spectacular results thanks to its adrenaline-fueled muscles.
