Electric cars are gaining ground in Europe. Sales of zero-emission models are on the rise and, for the first time, in Germany they are an alternative on the same level as combustion models. A new study shows Germans’ buying intentions for new cars, who see electrified cars as a serious option.
Until a few years ago, manufacturers invited customers to switch their combustion cars to electric ones, after passing through the plug-in hybrids, and thus be able to see first-hand a completely different driving, at least until the available electric range ends. However, there are many in Europe who They have made the direct jump to the electric one, avoiding the intermediate step, so the sales figures are getting higher and higher.
A trend that will not turn around, since the main brands have already announced a change in the business model since 2025 onwards. New car purchase intentions in Germany have been reflected in a new study, which concludes that the Germans already consider an electric at the same level as a combustion car. One of the most interesting results after a survey carried out with 1,000 subjects by Aral, because there are more.
40% of this sample intends to change cars in the next 18 months, the best value since the first study of “Trends in car buying” was carried out in 2017. Of this percentage, 19% are interested in a new car, and 10% in a used one. It should be noted that, in the 2019 survey, those interested in a brand new car were only 14% while those who bet on the used one were 12%. Very tight results two years ago, and they are responsible for the electric car.
Because, the Germans are increasingly convinced and, even, some confirm to be willing to pay a little more to get a zero-emission car, as long as the desired model was available in electric, and not only in combustion. Even of those who would pay more, no less than 62% would do so without the aid and incentives of the German Government. The survey also reveals that the expected autonomy amounts to 680 kilometers, compared to just over 500 in 2019. In addition, a large majority –more than 60% – it is acceptable to wait 30 minutes for the battery to recharge.
Regarding the best valued electric brands, it is Tesla the cat to the water, followed by Skoda, Ford and Opel, and well ahead of the Premium brands German like Audi and Volkswagen. Customers also consider Toyota, and in a more distant position to Mercedes. It is a matter of time before the electric ones prevail in Europe, even in the middle of the decade they can take an important leap.
