Gen Z users on Reddit expressed their anger at the famous thumbs-up emoji, saying it is a rude expression.
As reported Millennium, new generations are changing the meanings of some of the most ubiquitous emojis. Stickers and “faces” often hide a double meaning among young people. For example, think about what is actually being said when you share the eggplant emoji or the peach emoji.
Because of this, the thumbs-up emoji, which is typically used to say that something is okay, is undergoing controversy.
What’s Gen Z’s problem with the thumbs up emoji?
In a normal situation, emojis are used to make a message more informal, friendly or expressive. However, Gen Z is saying that the thumbs up is “rude” and “hostile” because people use it to invalidate opinions or “give someone the plane” in an argument.
The controversy broke out on Reddit where a user wrote:
“Am I not old enough to be comfortable with the thumbs up emoji reaction?”
This publication made other users share their points of view showing that they now feel that the emoji that used to be used to say that you liked something, today means that you are giving someone their side.
Other users said they used that emoji as a synonym for “aware”, while others to indicate that a plan to go out was the right one.
Generation Z on Reddit also discussed the value of other emojis like the red heart, clapping hands, and kiss.
