General Motors, one of the great colossi of the North American automotive industry, has set in motion all its machinery to carry out an ambitious product offensive. An offensive related to sustainable mobility and, more specifically, to electrification. The objective is clear, to become a relevant actor and protagonist of totally electric mobility.
Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, has made some very interesting statements to the medium CNBC
in which it establishes a key date in this start of the electrification process in which the company is located. General Motors will be able to sell as many electric cars as Tesla in 2025. It will be in that year when GM can match Tesla’s electric registrations in the United States.
General Motors’ electric offensive
Tesla is, at the moment, the reference brand in North America in the field of electric vehicles. Between the months of January and July 2021, the best-selling electric car in the United States was, by far, the Tesla Model Y. Tesla’s “little” SUV harvested 93,708 units. And what is equally important, the second place in the ranking of best-selling electric cars was for another model of that brand, the Tesla Model 3, which obtained 68,448 units.
The third step was for the Chevrolet Bolt EV that accumulated 21,896 units. The kind of Chevrolet has been the spearhead of General Motors’ electric offensive
during these last years. However, GM is aware that it needs to increase its electricity supply in the short term in order to increase its market share and, therefore, increase its sales figures.
General Motors intends to launch no less than 30 electric vehicles by 2025. Barra was very confident of the position that GM will obtain in the short term: “I feel very comfortable, because when people get into these vehicles, they are amazed. So we will implement them and keep working until we have the number one market share in electric vehicles.
The electrified vehicle gains ground in the United States
According to the forecasts provided by LMC Automotive, sales of electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) will account for less than 4% of total US registrations in 2021. By 2030, the electric vehicle is expected to have a 34.2% market share, while 4.1% of this percentage will be of plug-in hybrids.
One of the most ambitious projects that GM will embark on to promote the massification of the electric vehicle is the deployment of a network of 40,000 level 2 chargers that will be distributed between the United States and Canada.
