The measure implemented against Chedraui became an important precedent for the rest of the supermarkets to redirect their sustainable practices and not deliver plastic bags among other containers of this single-use material.
The announcement recalls the legislation against the use of single-use plastic bags in commercial establishments.
Today there are important studies that reveal how important sustainability is for the consumer.
Chedraui committed a sin when she was discovered delivering single-use plastics at her branch on Canal de Tezontle 1512 in the Iztacalco mayor’s office and the mistake of the brand has cost her the closure by authorities of the General Directorate of Environmental Inspection and Surveillance.
The story is an interesting reminder of the Solid Waste Law of the Federal Districtwhich then became a sentence against the use of single-use plastic containers and bags.
With these rules that have been in operation since 2020, establishments that are discovered using plastic containers face suspension and it is really a risky game that brands play, as long as they get cheap supplies in relation to the cost that sustainable containers represent.
In the case of Chedraui, the store was exposed by a wide series of irregularities, from those that have to do with the delivery of single-use bags that were detected in the fruit and vegetable aisles; companion animals; sausage and cheese, to the sale of single-use plastic containers such as cutlery, glasses, plates, trays and plastic-bodied cotton swabs.

goodbye to plastic
An interesting measure in retail that motivates the consumer to make a purchase decision is the composition of the packaging in which products are sold. The Dotcom Distribution study revealed in 2021 with an important argument, that 42 percent of consumers interviewed by the platform recognized that sustainable elements in a packaging design motivated a purchase decision, while 6 percent described banal elements like the fact that the packaging served as gift packaging.
These parameters that are being defined in retail have led to define an interesting phenomenon of creativity, where there is undoubtedly a commitment to resources such as those related to market innovation and, most importantly, the understanding that we live in an era where there are resources and practices that no longer have a place today.
Impact on the life of the consumer
A very interesting element in retail is the need for stores and brands in this industry to adapt to the context in which they operate. Many stores have had to make very strict measures, such as those applied in countries with strict religious measures, for example, part of their principles. This same rigor with which these measures are met must be followed by brands in countries like Mexico.
