The head of the hosting platform added that the work on the site is “from a pre-digital age.”
Chesky also criticized companies that have enacted hybrid schedules as part of their “return to office” plans.
Airbnb recently informed its current workers that they could work remotely indefinitely.
The Covid-19 pandemic completely changed the way of working around the world, where the home office model took over all industries. With the arrival of the coronavirus vaccine and the return to the new normal, many companies globally have begun to return to full-time office work or in some cases in a hybrid way. but according to recent statements by the CEO of Airbnb, this first modality is completely obsolete.
According to data from Statista, in 2020 in Mexico, almost three quarters of those interviewed online equivalent to 72 percent worked at home at some point in the three months before the survey. Only 27 percent of respondents did not move their office home during the period of confinement.
Given these data, a study prepared by Comunal Coworking details that the trend in 2022 will be to return to shared offices and coworkings, because they adjust to the face-to-face needs of each company and represent savings in renting a space.
Is full-time office work obsolete?
In a recent statement, the head of Airbnb, Brian Chesky, assured that traditional office jobs full-time are an outdated notion.
Through an interview, the CEO of the hosting platform added that the work on the site is “from a pre-digital age” which no longer makes sense for many races.
“I think the office as we know it is over. It’s kind of an anachronistic way,” Chesky said during an interview with Time magazine’s Leadership Report.
He also added that “if the office did not exist, I would like to ask, would we invent it? And if we invent it, why would it be invented?
“Obviously, people will continue to go to hospitals and to work, people will continue to go to coffee shops and to work; Those spaces make a lot of sense. But I think for someone whose job is a laptop, the question is, well, what’s an office supposed to do?” she added.
About hybrid work
During his interview, Chesky also took aim at companies that have enacted hybrid schedules as part of their plans to “Back at the office”, for which he said that “some companies do not realize that this two or three days a week is not super sustainable.”
“Offices will continue to exist as collaborative spaces, and virtual meetings have limitations in hampering efforts to build community,” he said.
“I’m not trying to paint a rosy picture of the future; there will be a lot to work on. All I’m saying is you can’t fight the future, we can’t try to hold on to 2019 beyond 1950. We have to move on,” she said.
These comments came just days after Airbnb informed its current workers that they could work remotely indefinitely, a likely move to attract and retain talent in a historically tight job market.
The theme of the loss of the home office has been heavily discussed by major companies like Googleor even by the digital pulse where Internet users ask that this modality never disappear.
