The work carried out by medical personnel has always been of great relevance and at this time is when it is best appreciated. At the same time, it is also high risk due to the exposure to which those in charge of caring for patients find themselves. For this reason, Health workers who are in direct contact with Covid-19 cases have been the first to receive the fourth dose of the vaccine to increase their protection.
In that sense, the safety of those responsible for caring for others is paramount. If the current pandemic has shown anything, it is that many have prioritized the health of patients instead of their own. Although it shows their commitment it also leaves them at a disadvantage.
Protecting caregivers
Against this background, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and the National Union of Social Security Workers (SNTSS) came together with the same goal. The goal is to coordinate efforts to reinforce the vaccination of health personnel who attend to the COVID-19 pandemic and who continue to be exposed to contracting the disease.
In this reinforcement stage, the IMSS and the SNTSS agreed to implement a strategy to immunize institutional health personnel. Due to the nature of their work, they need to be protected in the best way.
In this regard, the general director of Social Security, Zoé Robledo, pointed out that for the Institute the protection of its health personnel is a priority. COVID-19 care is in the hands of experienced professionals who have given a great fight to save lives, in a dedicated, committed and generous manner.
He stressed that at this stage their participation is of great importance in order to fully return to the daily activities of the New Normal.
He referred that the pandemic is still active and the vaccine is the most effective tool to avoid serious illness or even death.
What does the vaccination strategy consist of?
Zoé Robledo commented that the Institute is part of the national strategy called Operation April. The idea is to extend the protection of the population that for some reason has not been able to complete its schedule or receive any dose of immunization.
In this sense, Dr. Arturo Olivares Cerda, Secretary General of the SNTSS, stressed that it is very important that Social Security health workers receive a new vaccination booster against COVID-19.
He added that the care of patients affected by the virus will continue. Therefore, it was agreed with the institutional authorities the application of an additional dose.
“We are aware that IMSS workers have safeguarded the health of millions of Mexicans in the face of COVID-19. In fact, they are key pieces to keep the country’s public health standing. For these reasons, and for a matter of social justice, a new crusade will be implemented to immunize all Social Security personnel.
The national leader endorsed his commitment to continue ensuring the well-being of the working base in the fight against COVID-19.
The intensive vaccination campaign carried out by the IMSS and the institutions of the health sector concludes on April 30. It takes place in medical units, shopping centers, public squares, esplanades and bus terminals, among others.
