Early January is a great time to start healthier habits, and that includes digital habits. In the promises of the beginning of the year, online security should not be left for later and can be improved with simple actions. Kaspersky experts have compiled a list of healthy digital habits that can reinforce security of your personal data and even make your life easier in this new year.
1. New year, new passwords!
Start this new stage with a good password review; now is the time to verify and change the passwords of all accounts. Remember the main rule – do not repeat the same password for several accounts!
If you’re like many people and have multiple online accounts, then a reliable password manager is a good help. Modern password managers have features that greatly simplify life with passwords. For example, you can use autocomplete features for different browsers and platforms. As a result, a password manager will help you generate unique and complex passwords for each accountand you only need to remember one master password.
2. Subscribe to services that notify you of account data leaks
In addition to weak passwords, data breaches are another threat to your accounts personal and corporate. If your account details are leaked, scammers can use them to take control of your accounts. However, you can get ahead of scammers in 2023 using services that scan the latest leaks and verify that they contain your data. Advanced password managers also include this feature and quickly notify you if any of your saved logins or passwords are found in recent data breaches.
3. If you need more privacy, use a VPN
Now the range of possible scenarios for using a VPN has expanded significantly. Allows you to securely purchase and access online services, such as Home Banking or Internet Banking. Modern VPN services also provide high traffic speeds and prevent performance degradation during use.
Also, a VPN hides the IP address from websites and advertisers, ensuring better privacy. Web tracking can have unintended consequences, for example, targeted ads can reveal gifts you’ve bought for your family.
4. Transfer documents to a secure location
How do you store electronic versions so they stay secure and don’t fall into the wrong hands? You can create a folder on your computer or upload it to a password-protected cloud, but both options are potentially unsafe and may cause the loss of personal data.
A safe alternative would be store documents in password manager app that also provides a document vault which encrypts scanned files (such as PDFs) and keeps them safe.
5. Learn about children’s Internet hobbies with children
In order for a child’s path to the digital world to be safe and interesting, it is important to teach and share with him the rules of online safety from childhood. To make these conversations more enjoyable and interesting, parents can use games and other fun formats.
Too there are a variety of child safety software that can help parents learn more about children’s hobbies and help them develop healthy digital habits from an early age. Protection with screen limits and filters can be used for websites and applications.
“Privacy and security are not an outcome, but a process. Just as you can’t get fit or eat healthy overnight, protecting data and fingerprints also takes some dedication.. However, small steps like creating unique passwords for different accounts and using tools like password managers can go a long way to improve your privacy while simplifying this task.“, comments Vladislav Tushkanov, Kaspersky’s Chief Data Scientist.,
