In an effort to expand its health offer and contribute to the well-being of Mexicans, Farmacias Benavides announces the availability of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccines in its 63 offices located in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Jalisco, Nuevo León and Querétaro.
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that mainly affects the oral and genital mucosa. According to the Pan American Health Organization, it is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world, and can occur in both men and women, with some types of HPV causing cervical cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, the latter being one of the leading causes of death among women.
Studies carried out by the National Institute for Women reveal that approximately 80% of the population in Mexico is infected with the virus, and alarmingly, up to 90% of Mexican women have had HPV at some time in their lives. These figures indicate the importance of taking preventive measures and raising awareness among the population.
HPV may not cause health problems in many cases, but certain types of this virus are associated with a high risk of developing cervical cancers and genital warts. The mortality rate related to the Human Papilloma Virus in the region stands at 18.24%, which places Mexico among the countries with the highest incidence of this infection worldwide.
It is for this reason that it is recommended that women between the ages of 30 and 49 be screened for cervical cancer at least once in their lives. Screening options include conventional (papanicolaou) and liquid-based (LBC) cytology, visual inspection with acetic acid (VAT), and screening for the presence of high-risk HPV types, such as types 16 and 18.
In addition to screening tests, it is essential to emphasize the importance of prevention through the application of HPV vaccines. These vaccines have been shown to be effective in preventing infection by some types of HPV and the forms of cancer associated with these viruses.
Dr. Arturo Arriaga, manager of medical offices at Farmacias Benavides, emphasized the relevance of vaccination against the Human Papilloma Virus as a health priority. “We want to safeguard the safety and well-being of the population by providing HPV vaccines. These actions are part of our efforts to amplify the conversation on the subject and bring comprehensive health solutions to our clients,” said Dr. Arriaga.
Likewise, the importance of applying the HPV vaccine before starting an active sexual life is highlighted, in order to maintain sexual activity safely in the future. Combining vaccination with timely monitoring of the clinical history will allow the prevention and early detection of precancerous lesions, significantly reducing the incidence of cervical cancer.
Farmacias Benavides reaffirms its commitment to strengthen the health offer in Mexico through the availability of vaccines and adequate medical follow-up. Access to these preventive measures is essential to help Mexicans maintain their health and well-being, preventing possible diseases and promoting a better quality of life.
