- Telegram exceeds one billion downloads and continues to hunt WhatsApp
- Pável Dúrov’s application continues to experience significant growth in 2021
- With this achievement, Telegram joins WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Instagram as the apps that reach one billion downloads
Telegram has been a serious competition for the messaging app giant WhatsApp for some time, and today it has already surpassed one billion downloads and is closer to its rival.
Not long ago, Telegram reached 500 million global users, but now it is exceeding its own expectations and today it has twice the number of users, although it is still below WhatsApp.
Every day, more options arise to interact between users of social networks; the market is very wide and each app offers, although a similar service, a different experience.
We have seen it in all kinds of applications and, in that sense, it is natural that, as time progresses and, with it, technology, more options appear for users, which even become better positioned than the rest.
An example of this is what happened with TikTok last year, when they began to increase their numbers and, in this way, reach millions of users in a relatively short period of time. The TikTok effect offered, perhaps at that time, an experience different from others such as Snapchat or Intagram, the latter being the one that dominated the market in terms of publishing short videos.
It is ironic because, after this rebound of the Chinese platform, other applications have made improvements in their functions to compete, now, with TikTok; These functions bear an important resemblance to the product offered by the ByteDance application.
In that tenor, Telegram has also had significant growth in 2021. From the outset, in January of this year, it became the most downloaded platform globally during that period, this due to the measures that WhatsApp announced with which it would be sharing information with Facebook, the company that owns WhatsApp.
Given the discontent of Internet users with WhatsApp, he put Telegram in the spotlight and in a short time, also in 2021, it reached the number of 500 million active users worldwide.
Today, Telegram has joined the select group of apps that manage to exceed one billion downloads, where they are, of course, WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, among others.
Now, this new Telegram achievement keeps it still under the domain of WhatsApp, a platform that has more than two billion users and it still seems difficult to overcome it, but in the world of social networks and downloads, you never know and anything can happen.
We saw the same thing when it was announced that TikTok had surpassed Facebook as the most downloaded app, an unusual fact but one that speaks of how audiences are changing around the world.
Telegram, unlike WhatsApp, offers different services within the application, such as audio rooms, animated backgrounds, multi-session, deletion of messages, sending files of up to 2GB, among many other functions that its opponent still does not adhere to. your experience.
So far, the giant is still Facebook (the company that owns WhatsApp), but the fact that there are users who turn to other applications indicates that something is happening with the most used messaging platform so far that has not fallen into the taste of internauts.
The numbers, for both apps, will continue to grow, of course, but Telegram is taking an important step in the fight to catch up with WhatsApp.
