Great news for all fans of the popular Harry Potter franchise is that Hogwarts Legacy, the next installment of the franchise that will hit the video game industry, is just a stone’s throw away from its launch, and that is, fans will be able to relive all the adventures seen in previous installments, but with a generational leap that will truly be magical.
Something that we find quite striking is that, a number of leaks and rumors spread across the internet about what was now known as Hogwarts Legacy prior to its official unveiling at Sony’s PS5 showcase event in 2020. Since then, we’ve had a trailer, platform clarity, and a full video game reveal with the March 17, 2022, Sony State of Play event.

The video game is something Harry Potter fans have been clamoring for years: experiencing the life of a Hogwarts student in full detail. Even though there is still an aura of mystery surrounding this RPG, there are a few things that we know are yet to come, and the release date has finally been revealed as well.
After several alleged leaked dates spread throughout 2022, the official release date has finally come out on Friday, August 12. After an expected Holiday 2022 release, Hogwarts Legacy was revealed to be coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on February 23, 2023. Unfortunately for Nintendo Switch players, the release date has yet to be confirmed.
Explaining the decision not to provide an exact date yet, the team said they “need a little more time to deliver the best gaming experience possible.” So far, Portkey Games has shown off the Hogwarts Legacy cinematic trailer, showcasing the game in all its 4K glory, the next-gen, and of course the State of Play gameplay reveal.
Hogwarts itself is detailed to perfection, with its escalators, floating books, and instantly recognizable hallways, though fans should expect to see some differences, given the 100-year time jump between Hogwarts then and the castle as we know it.
After a long time with nothing really concrete, fans had their fears and doubts allayed after a full gameplay demo gave players a proper and delightful first look at the game. Here’s the full Sony State of Play Gameplay reveal for Hogwarts Legacy.
We should mention that, Hogwarts Legacy will not feature multiplayer, but instead will be a single-player and narrative experience. According to the official video game Q&A: “Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player experience and does not have online or co-op gameplay.”
The first thing to note about Hogwarts Legacy is that it’s not set in any time period that the Potter books or movies have explored in the past. Instead, it takes us back to the late 1800s, as detailed on the video game’s official website.
“Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart,” the website reveals. “You have received a belated acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master ancient magic.”
As shown in the video game’s full reveal, you’ll start your fifth year at Hogwarts as a newcomer, and despite the presence of the sorting hat, you’ll get to choose your house. In addition to your conventional year of apprenticeship, your character will also have to deal with the threat of evil goblins and strange wizards with evil intentions.
