It has been one of the most anticipated period series thanks to the immense cast and the creation of Julian Fellowes (‘Downton Abbey’) and it has not disappointed. ‘the golden age‘ (The Gilded Age) will return to HBO Max with a season 2 with more cups, corsets and the cream of the cream of New York society.
With a first season finished last March, let’s review everything we know from Season 2 of the HBO period drama.
The history
Few plot details we know about this season 2 beyond what needs to be continued, like the big Marian’s heartbreak and the revelation that Peggy had a son whom he believed dead but a letter hidden by his father gives him the clue that he may still be alive in Philadelphia.
Also, the moves in the cast (recurring who are promoted to “regular”) give some clues about the plots: Turner could continue conspiring despite his dismissal; there are clues to the romance between Thomas and Peggy; the beginning of an unlikely friendship between Bertha and Mrs. Astor; or the coming to light of Watson’s secret could be the main lines of the new episodes.
In Fellow’s words:
“I thought the whole season 1 should be about Bertha’s fight and I really wanted to use the Alva Vanderbilt cotillion because I love the fact that she blackmailed Mrs. Astor to come. It seemed to me a good end to her vaulting ambition up to that point».
Also a greater protagonism of the servants is pointed outsomewhat following the evolution that Fellowes led to in ‘Downton Abbey’.
The cast
Thomas Cocquerel will be the main casualty for season 2 of the series. Low caused by the plot that has starred with his character Tom Raikes.
The rest of the immense cast repeats practically in full: Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Blake Ritson, Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Taissa FarmigaHarry Richardson, Denée Benton, Simon Jones, Jack Gilpin, Audra McDonald, Nathan Lane, John Douglas Thompson, Ashlie Atkinson, Claybourne Elder, and Ward Horton.
On the other hand, we have some great incorporations with the signings of Robert Sean Leonard as the Reverend Matthew Forte and Laura Benanti as the recently widowed Susan Blane. Also joining are Nicole Brydon Bloom, Michael Braugher, Christopher Denham, David Furr, Ben Lamb, Matilda Lawler, Dakin Matthews and Rebecca Haden.
The filming
The series has not yet officially announced the start of filming for season 2 of ‘The Golden Age’. Yes, it is known that it should be scheduled for this month of May at various locations in Newport, Rhode Island, where Season 1 was filmed last year.
At the moment there seems to be no changes in the creative team, with Julian Fellowes writing all episodes alongside Sonja Warfield. Michael Engler is the lead director.
the release date
It is still too early to know the release date. If filming is confirmed this May, it is most likely that we will be able to see season 2 during spring 2023 (probably April).
The trailer and images
At the moment we do not have a trailer or images of season 2 of ‘The Golden Age’.
