Brain chips arrived Elon Musk’s Neuralink. The technology company of the richest man in the world announced this Wednesday that it already has permission to begin human trials.
According to the company’s statement, the first patients to have a chip inserted into the brain will be people with paralysis.
The study called PRIME (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface or Robotically Implanted Precise Brain-Computer Interface in English) seeks to work for at least six years with patients with “cervical spinal cord injuries or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).”
This trial seeks to ensure that patients can eventually “control external devices with their thoughts.”
“In the long term, Neuralink hopes to play a role in reducing the risk of AI to civilization by improving human-to-AI (and human-to-human) bandwidth by several orders of magnitude,” the tweet reads in English.
Elon Musk’s Neuralink received FDA approval
Last May, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Neuralink approval for testing in humans.
The company was accused of animal abuse in 2022 for its tests on chimpanzees, but the firm denied the questions.
Neuralink is a neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk and other co-founders in 2016. Its main goal is to develop brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) that allow direct communication between the human brain and computers or other electronic devices. In essence, Neuralink seeks to create a high-speed, bidirectional connection between the brain and machines.
