María Salud Caballero, better known as “Mamá Coco” in real life, has passed away, confirmed the Michoacán Ministry of Tourism. She was the Mexican grandmother from whom the physical characteristics were taken to create the character of Disney and Pixar “Mama Coco”
Just last September 16, the woman had turned 109 years old, that is, she died a month after her birthday. Moreover, she lived all her life in the town of Santa Fe de la Laguna.
Although on Sunday afternoon the version of the death of the centenarian woman began to circulate, we waited to announce the news.
Since 2017, after the premiere of the Disney film, thousands of people from all over the world have come to the town of Santa Fe de la Laguna, municipality of Quiroga. In the first place to have a forum with the grandmother of the film, in addition to knowing part of the real scenes on which “Coco” was based.
Due to the massive visits Maria received, her relatives started a business. This consists of the sale of souvenirs such as t-shirts, pens and cups with the face of “Mamá Coco” in real life.
Roberto Monroy, Secretary of Tourism of Michoacán, commented on his social networks: “I deeply regret the death of María de Salud Ramírez Caballero ‘Mamá Coco’, a tireless woman and a great example of life and who was the inspiration for this beloved character who gave the Around the World. My prayers for her eternal rest and for her family to find early resignation.”
María Salud was discovered by Pixar producers when they were scouting around Pátzcuaro. That was when the old lady posed to create the animated character.
