“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei (The voice of the people is the voice of God, in Latin),” Musk wrote.
Starting Friday afternoon, the world’s richest man launched another poll-like tweet asking users if he should reinstate Trump’s account. Almost 52% of those who responded did so in the affirmative.
Musk bought Twitter in a $44 billion deal last month, and since then one of the most popular social networks on the planet has seen a wave of shake-ups, starting with mass layoffs, key executive resignations, and now the return from one of the most controversial users in its history.
The return of Trump, who after his ouster launched his own Truth Social social network without much success, does not come as a complete surprise. Musk defines himself as a fervent promoter of freedom of expression and since the rumors of the purchase that he planned of Twitter began, there has been speculation about the return of the controversial ex-president.
Meanwhile, Trump will get his favorite digital megaphone back at a pivotal moment, having launched his third bid for the US presidency just last week.
