Turning Cointelegraph items into collectibles to preserve the most memorable moments in the cryptocurrency industry is now a reality. Cointelegraph’s historical collection will allow all articles published by the largest cryptocurrency media outlet to be converted into non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
With the help of readers, Cointelegraph aims to create the first decentralized catalog of news that cements the evolution of cryptocurrencies on the blockchain. The waiting list is now open, but only the first 500 readers will be able to participate in early access starting in early November. The feature will roll out to everyone soon after, in mid-November.
Just as the NBA Top Shot symbolizes important moments in the world of basketball, Cointelegraph’s Historical NFT collection ensures that the news has a lasting impact. In a world where trending content is judged by the number of likes it receives, the value of an article can now be governed by the number of readers willing to collect it.
With Instagram introducing digital collectibles to its wide audience, it is becoming increasingly apparent that media consumption patterns are changing. Simply being able to like, share, and subscribe is no longer enough for regular users. The next generation of media consumers will need a new way to engage with content they find valuable, as demonstratedfor example, in the closed beta of Lens Protocol.
It is nothing new to collect content that you like. Do you remember those Sunday afternoons you spent at the kitchen table carefully cutting out magazine articles about your favorite artist? Or even the careful selection of your MP3 playlist to fill the space on your player?
Like any collectible, some newspaper headlines have sentimental value; moreover, they present a value for the history of humanity. This is why some old newspapers sell for thousands of dollars on eBay.
How about exclusively owning an item commemorating Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrade or El Salvador adopting BTC as legal tender? Many articles that seem like news today will become valuable artifacts tomorrow.
Commenting on the launch, Cointelegraph Editor-in-Chief Kristina Lucrezia Cornèr stated: “Enabling the content platform to be an active part of the Web3 ecosystem is key to a sustainable creative economy. At Cointelegraph we proudly take responsibility for maintaining a high level of decentralized space coverage and preserving journalistic integrity, and it’s about time our stories were treated as collectibles. I think it will bring more appreciation to the hard and important work reporters do and help support independent journalism.”
Mintmade, the POS platform behind Cointelegraph’s Historical NFT collection, is developed by a team of non-fungible token pioneers who have been exploring tokenized media concepts since 2018, when they launched an NFT-powered web series.
Ivan Sokolov, Founder of Mintmade, added: “We are delighted to have partnered with such a caliber of media outlet for this bold and innovative project. For decades, newspapers from the greatest days in history have been prized by collectors. By allowing items to become NFTs, we are bringing this time-honored tradition into the 21st century.”
Anyone can sign up for the waiting list to start the hunt for those precious moments. But only the first 500 applicants will get early access, so hurry up.
