EA is not afraid to expand on a checkbook basis if necessary
“We have a Need for Speed game coming up, and there are three or four more things that we haven’t announced yet,” EA CEO Blake Jorgensen said in the last shareholder call after the end of the fiscal quarter (via MP1st). “But you can imagine we’re always trying to find ways to grow the portfolio year over year through new titles, new IP and expansion, and also acquisition**, which at the moment we are in summary mode, but that does not mean that we will not continue to watch everything that follows.
It’s not that this buying studios catches EA again, that last year it was done with Codemasters, but it raises some curiosity to know what studios the American company may have had its eye on. Would it be an independent studio or a large company with several in-house studios? We will have to wait to see if EA really has the need to expand right now.
As for games to be announced, it is also a mystery to know what projects Jorgensen was referring to when he was talking about those three or four games in development. Two of those may be the Star Wars games Respawn announced last week alongside Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, aside from the new Need For Speed installment expected later this year that hasn’t been announced yet.
