At the end of March, Dyson surprised by announcing the Dyson Zone, air-purifying headphones that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. However, beyond the promotional materials, little was known about the characteristics of this peculiar device. Until today, at least.
Is that the company finally has revealed the specifications of its new product, with which it proposes to combat both air and noise pollution. A challenge that is no less, which has taken 6 years of development and which from 2023 will be available in several countries, including Spain.
The Dyson Zone immediately attract attention for its aesthetics. But that striking appearance goes hand in hand with functionality. After all, we’re talking about active noise-canceling headphones that include in-cup compressors capable of delivering a flow of purified air into a visor positioned in front of the nose and mouth.
Dyson’s intention is to offer a product that improve the standard of living of users. The company ensures that 99% of people live in regions where air quality is very poor; while more than 50% do so in places with high levels of noise pollution, and the expectation for the future is that it will increase to 70% of the population. This is how the idea of creating headphones that are capable of blocking noise and offering purified air arose.
Dyson Zone: active noise cancellation and air purification in a single device
If we focus first on the audio section, the Dyson Zone sets out to mark the ground with its ANC technology. The headphones include 11 microphones, of which 8 are used for canceling outside noise. But what is truly impressive is that they are able to monitor the sounds of the environment up to 384,000 times per second.
In addition, the company promises faithful and full-spectrum audio, since they can reproduce frequencies from 6 Hz to 21 kHz. But that’s not all, as Dyson has individually calibrated each unit of its new headphones, scientifically fine-tuned so that everything can be heard in more detail.
As for air purification, the Dyson Zone uses double layer electrostatic filters They are capable of capturing 99% of particulate contamination down to 0.1 microns. These filters have a duration of 12 months and can be easily changed, without requiring technical assistance.
As we said before, inside the cups of the headphones are the compressors that are responsible for supplying the purified air. They have been miniaturized to occupy as little space as possible, and to function millimeters from the users’ ear canal without generating distortion or discomfort. Not a minor fact, considering that spin at almost 10,000 revolutions per minute.
However, the Dyson Zone can also be used without the air purifying function. Those who wish to use only the headphones can remove the visor and the flow of purified air will stop automatically. It is also worth mentioning that the device is capable of stopping audio playback when it detects that the user has removed them.
Autonomy and additional functions from the app
Dyson Zone air-purifying headphones use lithium-ion batteries that are rechargeable via a USB-C port. According to the manufacturer, they reach an autonomy of up to 50 hours when using them only to play audio. However, the story changes drastically when you turn on the air purifier, which reduces its useful life to a maximum of 4 hours. The recharge of the battery, meanwhile, is completed in about three hours.
Another interesting point to mention is that the Dyson Zone have several configuration options through the app MyDyson. From there it is possible to check the status of the filters and the air quality, as well as adjust the speed of the purified air flow or the noise cancellation mode. The app also offers audio equalization options with three presets.
Price and availability
The Dyson Zone will debut in January next year when it launches in China. While in March they will arrive in the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore and Hong Kong. Its landing in Spain will take place in June 2023, through its official online store and the Dyson Demo Store. Unfortunately, the air purifying headphones have no confirmed price yet.
