Lorcana is a card game that represents an ambitious project for Disney and Ravensburger.
Disney has collected a series of successes in terms of movies and series, since many of them are especially popular with children’s audiences. However, many of his fans who have grown up with the iconic films of the franchise have already reached adulthood, just to remember with nostalgia some of the most significant moments in his feature films.
In this way, the company has also decided to expand to theme parks, being an attraction for thousands of tourists each year. But although it seems that within all its shows, attractions and animated films there seem to be no problems in terms of audience, Disney has decided to expand its entertainment options.
A promising new game for Disney
Recently, the franchise has announced that it is developing a collectible card gamein collaboration with a board game publisher with a lot of experience in the field, which will be a great entertainment for the whole family, according to the plans.
So far there are not many details about the game. However, this is not the first time the company has considered launching a card game. Despite the fact that Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon Trading Card Game already exist, franchises with great success around the world -valued at approximately one billion dollars-, Disney does not want to be left behind and has gone all out with this next release.
There are many speculations regarding the subject. Of course, Lorcana’s name first came up at the end of 2021, after the word was trademarked by Disney. Initially, the categorization was going to be focused on “goods and services” -to include a large number of random objects, from paper party hats to skins for mobile devices-, however, it had not yet been clarified what Lorcana was going to be about. .
On the one hand, there is no doubt that the franchise has sought to attract fans of Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering, surprising them with its own delivery that fits the interests of the players. But now that Disney has officially announced its next game, things might be a little clearer for its fans.
According to the announcement, Disney Lorcana will be published by Ravensburger, its popular line of Disney-themed board games (especially strategy games). This name has been recognized as Villainous. The series was launched in 2018 and so far it has almost 30 villains belonging to Disney, Star Wars and Marvel. So that, the new collectible card game is a family project, scheduled for release at the end of 2023.
So far the price of Lorcana’s base game is not known nor is there more information about its subsequent card packs. However, the note announcing the game explains that the collection will feature Disney characters. In the words of Shane Hartley, the creative director of global games:
“Inspired by storybook openings—from classic Disney movies—it features visible line work and vibrant color washes. Also, it mixes traditional qualities — hand drawings you see in fairy tale books — with new digital techniques.”
This means that the art style will be based on the original, but will also include new content. There’s even been talk that it “will contain more original Disney artwork than any other product ever created,” as John Balen, Disney’s vice president of product design, put it.
But it should be clarified that the collaboration will be directly between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Ravensburger, so players will not be able to see Star Wars or Marvel expansions. Or at least not for the moment.
“East [juego] is probably the biggest potential that Ravensburger has looked for. And therefore, perhaps also the largest investment we have made in any type of project and initiative”.
Said Filip Francke, the CEO and global head of gaming for Ravensburger North America.
The game will be set in the world of Lorcanawhere players will assume the role of a sorcerer named Illumineer, while he will use his powers to bring to life some iconic Disney figures and, in this way, form a group with which he can venture into “the Great Illuminator”, a world filled with “every Disney song and story ever made” as well as its characters.
Both Disney and Ravensburger plan to release four new card games per year. Y The first look at the installment will be at Disney’s D23 exhibition on September 9.in addition to the fact that seven Lorcana characters will be revealed.
