I really liked to see Mary Poppins when I was little (and being older, why deny it). Julie Andrews descended from the clouds of London to impart love and education to children by knocking on their doors. Devolver Digital liked the version that combines the umbrella with a good shotgun better.
In a new example of mastery when it comes to researching projects with potential, the editor has set her sights on Doinksoft. Gato Roboto’s parents have gone from creating a work in black and white with a dose of action to giving it their all in a bet full of color and full of intensity. Thanks to that, Gunbrella has moved to the top of my most anticipated games of 2023.
It rains, then it shoots
Can’t begin to talk about Gunbrella without making it clear what the rude lumberjack that we have as the protagonist is up to. A peculiar weapon, a unique tool you will never find in any store. A shotgun capable of spitting out a good amount of shrapnel and deploying an umbrella with multiple functions.
The operation of the firearm is evident, since we have infinite shotgun ammunition, but we can also exchange it with machine gun bullets or even grenades. We cannot abuse the last two, since we will find them after defeating enemies, buying in stores or bursting obstacles.
Its importance is paramount, but the real fantasy occurs when we unfold the umbrella. By simply keeping a button we will have a fabulous shield that allows us to invoke the power of the parry. Indeed, if we successfully block each of the bullets that are sent to us, we will return them to the attacker.
In this way we will run into machine guns that do not allow a single breath or enemies that fly over our heads. Far from being limited to defense, its importance translates magnificently to movement. And it is that the umbrella is used to perform dashes in all directions, to the sides and up.
One touch to get high quickly and overcome obstacles; a single touch to control our fall like a feather. In addition, the scenarios lend themselves to us playing with speed, with jumps and self-confidence. Our protagonist is capable of jumping from wall to wall and stopping his fall on them, as well as taking advantage of some zip lines to get hooked on with the umbrella.
A real delight thanks to the fact that the levels are usually large and allow us to play with different approaches to enemies or platforms. A fabulous feeling once you’re at the controls.
Of course, if we are injured we can eat apples, heal ourselves with bandages or use some of the objects in the inventory to heal ourselves. On the other hand, we can take advantage of certain elements scattered around the stage, such as explosive barrelswhich are fired from a shot to reach the rival that we want to eliminate.
noir punk world
But, what is the excuse to shoot us with everything that moves? The world of Gunbrella It is a more complex than it may seem at first glance. Our protagonist is in search of revenge carrying the ultimate weapon, at the same time that he begins to reach different towns.
Each of them is riddled with rogue cults, petty gangsters, law enforcement overzealous police, and all sorts of other characters. Business exploitation has ruined part of these metallic landscapes that have been nourished by a natural resource that is becoming scarce. Let’s go, a good mirror in which to look at ourselves everybody.
However, that may be the last of the problems, as supernatural beings are beginning to appear everywhere. Therefore we will have fights against final bosses that seem to be taken from one of the nightmares of Stephen King either H. P. Lovecraft. While taking down such monstrosities will be our primary goal, there is much more to explore.
The inhabitants of the towns will tell us about their miseries and how they need us to help them find something or someone. side quests that will be recorded in our logbook in which all our steps are recorded. In addition, we will also run into stores where we can sell the scrap that we have left over and get ammunition or succulent improvements.
There are also sections where we forget about ruthless skirmishes and move on to another approach. Avoiding an area full of spikes or thinking carefully to unravel a puzzle are also ballots that we will have to solve. Finally, everything is rounded off with an excellent sound, with very particular effects that remain engraved in the mind.
I have only been able to play a demo of Gunbrella, but the sensations have been really positive. The title is positioned as one of the possible revelations for next year with its arrival on PC and Nintendo Switch, with no confirmed date. Take note and practice this winter with the umbrella; you will need it.
