The development of the new Volkswagen Amarok is underway. Volkswagen’s plans for the immediate future include continuing to bet on pick-up vehicles. Now, is there room for a Volkswagen electric pick-up? The top manager of the company in North America opens the door to the launch of an alternative to the Tesla Cybertruck.
volkswagen keep betting on pick-ups. The important German manufacturer is working at full capacity in the process of developing the new generation of the Volkswagen Amarok, a model that has been playing a relevant role in a very competitive segment in Europe. The new Amarok will keep a very close relationship with the Ford Ranger. And it is the fruit of strategic alliance between Volkswagen and Ford.
Bearing in mind that Volkswagen has not left aside this very interesting formula and that it is in turn very committed to electric mobility, a decisive question must be asked, Will there be an electric pick-up from Volkswagen? A senior official of the company has opened the door to the launch of a new model to deal with the emerging market for electric pick-ups.
Volkswagen does not rule out an electric pick-up for the United States
Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen of America, has granted an interview to a medium in which, among other issues, he has spoken openly about the possibility that Volkswagen enrich its product offer with a 100% electric pick-up. Even more so when giants of the automotive industry have already presented their first electric pick-ups or are in the process of doing so soon.
The top manager of the company in the United States, Mexico and Canada assured that the emerging market for electric pick-ups offers a great opportunity for the Volkswagen brand. “I think it’s the opportunity of a lifetime in this segment because the electrification gives you a reset moment. It gives you an opportunity to bring some, shall we say, alternatives and some ideas to this great segment,” Keogh said.
Volkswagen is analyzing the different options and, although at the moment it is not a discarded idea, it cannot be affirmed that this proposal will receive the green light from the dome located in Germany. Keogh made it clear that “it’s something we’re actively looking into, but there’s nothing to report right now.”
The electric pick-ups of Ford, General Motors and Tesla
In the United States, pick-ups account for the bulk of new vehicle registrations. The category of full-size pick-ups plays a leading role and that is why the giants of the American automotive industry have decided to start with it in their commitment to electrification at the highest level. The electric pick-ups of Ford, General Motors and Tela are already a reality. Some models that will storm dealerships in a short time.
Keogh points out that the electric vehicle era opens the door to new competitors in a market niche where traditionally the buyer would have opted for Ford, General Motors or Stellantis: “I think historically a buyer would say: Buy F-150, buy RAM or buy Silverado. Now they might be saying: I’m going to buy an electric one. That reset moment provides a competitive opportunity to get in, whether it’s Rivian or us.”
Is Volkswagen in a position to launch a full-size pick-up on its own? It is a titanic task to face. A key in this regard would be, neither more nor less, to resort to his strategic association with Ford. Models like the Ford F-150 Lightning or the Tesla Cybertruck will soon be on American roads.
