Have you already defined the principles that will guide your life?
I’m reading a book that gave me the best advice I’ve heard in a long time. Because by beginning to put it into practice I am beginning to realize the magnitude it can have on my actions and therefore on my life.
It is a concept that may seem simple, since you can start putting it into practice immediately, but it requires time to refine it. What do I mean? To the principles.
Principles: rules or norms that guide a person’s action
I started reading the book because of the good reviews I heard about it from people I respect a lot, so I decided to do some research beforehand and in some interviews I saw, I realized the impact that the principles he talks about had on his life, so I decided to go deep.
I somehow thought that I had defined my values and my principles because I knew how to name some that are important to me, that my parents and my teachers instilled in me, but it turns out that, when analyzed in detail, my decisions and actions sometimes have nothing What to do with those values.
Ray Dalio, the author of the book, comments that the decisions we make at a certain moment can be influenced by many things, such as the mood we have, how we feel, whether we are tired or motivated, the knowledge we have fresh at that moment, among others. others, but we rarely stop to think about whether the decision we will make is in accordance with the principles we have and ultimately what we want to become or do.
In his book he mentions the values that govern the culture and actions of his company and the personal principles that he uses, but I believe that personal principles have to be developed first, because everything else is derived from there.
Be the person you want to be
I believe that the principles that one has to choose should be principles that do not lead you to do things the way you currently do them, nor that are within your comfort zone, but principles that lead you to be the person you want to be and that They take you where you want to go, that is, the principles should guide you to do those things that are difficult, but that make you grow as a person.
For example, one of my principles is that despite the fear or nervousness I have regarding a certain action that is presented to me, I should not back down, but rather I should face it. In the past there have been times when I have passed up opportunities because I did not decide to do something because it was outside my comfort zone, so now when a new opportunity presents itself, I remember that I must act according to that principle, which that will lead me to an experience that will leave me with something new, probably something better and that will make me grow as a person.
It will take me time to define and refine all the principles, but the first step is to get started. And do you already know what principles you have?
