Check out this and other important health news.
It is estimated that some 6,800 peer-reviewed academic articles are published daily. This is a lot of science, but don’t worry. We will do the hard work for you every morning. This is your daily dose of the latest discoveries from magazines, research institutions and health news media from around the world.
KEEP COTONETS OUT OF EARS
Your mom was right: keep anything smaller than your elbow out of your ears. This is a recommendation published in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Using things like cotton swabs, hairpins, toothpicks, or car keys to remove earwax can cause cuts in the ear, perforation of the eardrum, or dislocation of the ear ossicles, which can cause problems such as hearing loss, dizziness or ringing in your ears. Also, you’re likely to just push the wax deeper into your ear canal – causing potential damage to your hearing.
EAT BLUEFISH
More evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can help your health: consuming more of EPA and DHA fatty acids can reduce the risk of heart disease by 16 percent in people with high blood levels and by 14 percent in people with LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), according to a meta-analysis of 34 studies. Try to include more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, eating more blue (fatty) fish, such as salmon and fresh tuna.
CHANGE YOUR WORKOUT
Have you ever wondered why you don’t notice the results of your workouts? You may not respond to that exercise, a new Canadian study reports. The good news is that changing your routine is likely to help you. In the study, many of those who showed no aerobic improvement, after three weeks of resistance training, experienced benefits after the same amount of time doing high-intensity interval training and vice versa. This means it’s probably not that your body doesn’t respond to all exercise, you just need a different training program, the researchers say.
LOSE WEIGHT TO HELP YOUR CHILDREN
Apanzonta not only affects you, but your children can also suffer. In a new study from the journal Pediatrics, children with obese parents were 75 percent more likely to fail a test that measured how well they are able to interact with others. And the risk increases if your partner is also obese. Children with two obese parents were almost three times more likely to fail a problem-solving test. So, starting a diet and training program together, you are more likely to lose weight successfully if your partner is making changes as well.
LOOK AT YOUR NEW ORGAN
Scientists have “discovered” a new organ in your digestive system. It’s called the mesentery, and it joins the intestine to the abdominal wall to keep everything in place. Previously, scientists thought it was a bunch of different structures, but a new review in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology concluded that it is actually the same piece, making it the newest organ in our body.
