“Concacaf is extremely disappointed by the offensive and discriminatory language shouted by a large number of Cruz Azul fans during the second leg of the Concacaf Champions League. We congratulate the referees for correctly activating the anti-discrimination protocol and the security of the stadium for expelling hundreds of Cruz Azul fans when the match was suspended“said the sports body through a public letter.
The stadium screens indicated the measures that would be taken during the game, as part of the protocol indicated by Concacaf, however it indicates that there will be strong disciplinary measures.
“Since the fans of the local club evidently participated in the use of discriminatory language, this case is being referred to the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee, who will investigate. An update will be provided at the end of this disciplinary process“added the statement.
The Liga MX, which already has the problem deeply rooted in the local fans, has reacted in favor of Concacaf through a publication on social networks.
“Liga BBVA MX will support Concacaf in the processes that derive from the resolution of its Disciplinary Committee. We will continue to reinforce the call for inclusion and respect for everyone inside and outside the stadiums with the # GritaMéxico campaign; in addition to joining the efforts of the Mexican Soccer Federation and the Confederation, in order to raise awareness and thus avoid any sign of discrimination, “he stated.
The Mexican clubs América and Monterrey will play in the final of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League after having eliminated the Philadelphia Union of the United States and the Cruz Azul of Mexico, respectively, in the semifinals.
