One of the maximum commitments of the current government has been to eradicate corruption and now the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) took it too seriously. With the support of an investigation by the Secretary of the Navy, 11 public servants were identified in alleged collusion with the regulated sector. Therefore, the decision was made for their immediate separation.
The people involved were responsible for analyzing possible health risks in the process of elaboration of Official Mexican Standards and substances and products of great importance, such as pesticides.
As a result of permanent intelligence work, evidence of destruction of information (hard drives), leaking of projects to modify standards, and exchange of emails where a former high-level official was reported periodically on operational actions and information was found. related to Cofepris authorizations.
It should be noted that the former official of whom mention is made and was executive director of Risk Evidence at Cofepris, currently serves as owner of a company that manages procedures for matters related to health.
Cofepris will not tolerate corruption
With the dismissal of the persons allegedly involved, the pertinent complaints were also filed with the Internal control organ (OIC) for the corresponding investigations for alleged administrative responsibilities.
Now it will be the jurisdictional authority that determines the corresponding criminal action based on solid evidence collected by this authority, in collaboration with the Secretary of the Navy.
The work of the Intelligence Center that began to operate on August 3, 2022. One of its objectives is to dismantle the corruption mechanisms that have permeated for more than 20 years and to consolidate the operational order in the institution.
As part of the actions carried out are the investigation and denunciation of old practices where private interests predominated, administrative mismanagement, discretion in processes, and the operation of managers or coyotes, who impacted the entry, assignment, and evaluation of procedures. .
Actions to prevent illegal acts
To prevent corruption in Cofepris, at the same time, new actions are implemented, such as direct and transparent communication with the industry and productive sectors through the New Linkage Strategy with Regulated Industry, and the National Good Governance Strategy. The latter in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Function (SFP).
Cofepris is also advancing in digitization and administrative simplification, innovative and modern procedures that are essential to trace the route of transparency and honesty in the attention to the regulated industry, with strict vigilance and adherence to the regulatory framework in health matters.
Being a National Security institution, Cofepris has carried out actions in the fight against corruption in full coordination with the Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of Health of the Government of Mexico and with the Secretary of Citizen Security of the Government of Mexico City.
