“I am very excited at the prospect of becoming a new team owner in E1 and having a team that represents Mexico in the UIM E1 World Championship,” said Checo Pérez after making his foray into the sport official.
“Given my relationship with Alejandro (Agag), I have closely followed what he has been doing and his various championships, and I think what he has achieved in promoting more sustainable forms of motorsport is commendable. To see a racing team flying high the Mexican flag on a global stage will be amazing and I can’t wait to see the RaceBird in action for the first time I have heard many positive stories about the boat and the exciting sports product that E1 is trying to create for the fans with the events in the city,” added the Red Bull man.
One of the co-founders of E, as well as being a pioneer of electric mobility, Alejandro Agag, who was the team manager and owner of the Barwa Addax in GP2, in which Pérez raced and finished as runner-up in the 2010 GP2 Series season.
Checo continued, “I’m sure this will be a great challenge in my career and a learning experience. I’m looking forward to starting and helping to grow the fan base in Mexico and around the world.”
The regatta teams will use identical boats for the first two seasons of the championship, after which the regulations will open up to allow teams to design and develop their own electric technologies.
The first season of the UIM E1 World Championship will be held in 2023and closer to the dates more teams and the provisional schedule will be revealed.
