In an interview, Charlie Cox spoke about his Daredevil character entering the MCU, with an offer he received since June 2020.
In a long interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Charlie Cox recounted how he was invited to join the MCU since June 2020, as well as what the future could hold for his Dardevil.
As the note reads, in June 2020 Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, called him on the phone to ask if he had a few minutes to chat. “The call was not a hoax: it was a tremendous opportunity. Matt Murdock has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And his first appearance after Netflix’s devastating cancellation of Daredevil in 2018 would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cox was equally surprised and elated.”
“It was a pretty surreal moment, I’m not going to lie,” Charlie Cox told THR, referring to the June 2020 call with which he officially joined the MCU. “You have to keep in mind that a few years have passed. And I was pretty convinced that it was over. Kevin said, ‘We have a few ideas, but I wanted to make sure you’re interested in principle.’ And I said, ‘I’m very interested.’ Then I didn’t hear from anyone for two months. And I got to the point of wondering if he had dreamed it.”
The return of Matt Murdock
A few months later, Cox had to go into hiding to get on the set of No Way Home for the scene with Tom Holland, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei. “I felt very comfortable being able to fit into that scene… I played the character almost every day for four years. I feel that the essence of him is now deep inside me. I did not worry too much about it, but I was still quite nervous that day, something that had not happened to me for a long time, “said the actor.
Then, he reflected on the significant weight that this scene would have for those who have enjoyed his character for three seasons. “It was a great moment, not only for me, but for the character. I felt a real sense of responsibility,” Cox explained. “If that scene works, if it’s great, if it seems to fall into place, then the sky is the limit where this could go. And it would be great for me, naturally, but also for Matt. I feel attached to him, even if it sounds a bit strange.”
The easter egg of the Happy Hogan who was Foggy Nelson
Jon Favreau, who plays Happy Hogan in the MCU, also participates in the scene. “And it didn’t escape Cox or the Iron Man director that he, too, had a connection to Daredevil, having played Foggy Nelson in the 2003 film starring Ben Affleck as the superhero. The duo couldn’t help it and tried to sneak in a little nod to that movie.”
However, this spontaneous wink was left out of the final cut: “I don’t think they used it, but we added a little easter egg where he says, ‘Yeah, I’m a little foggy about how that happened’ or something,” she said. Cox. “It was a really cool time for me to meet him and chat about all of that.”
Cox also noted how difficult it was to keep Matt Murdock’s return a secret for so long.
“I hate lying. But I really didn’t want to ruin it for anyone. My opinion is that if someone asks you and you say: ‘I don’t know… We’ll just have to wait and see.’ That gives it away! It’s obvious. No one is going to say that if you’re not into it. I’m relieved it’s over.”
What does the future hold for Daredevil and his nemesis the Kingpin?
The note ends by mentioning that Charlie Cox and his Daredevil co-star, Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio, have remained friends since the series’ cancellation. And remember that D’Onofrio told Cox that he was sure his time with the characters was not over. Over time, one returned with Spider-Man: No Way Home and the other with Hawkeye.
About the future of the characters, of course Charlie Cox cannot reveal much about the actor, but at least we know that they will continue in the MCU. “Look, I have no idea what anyone’s plans are right now, but I guess there are more things we can do… I know a little, not a lot, but a little. I imagine, I hope, that our worlds will collide again because the things we’ve done in the past were tremendously fun to do, and he’s an incredible actor.”
