Few antiheroes have left such an impact on manga readers as Cell from Dragon Ball.. Thanks to his great arrogance and raw power of his, Cell has earned his role among the most famous villains of all time. However, that evil is further accentuated in new fan art that personalizes the biodroid as a samurai warlord.
Cell, was a character that debuted in 1992, but since then has been one of the three biggest threats that Goku and his friends constantly face in the Dragon Ball series. Hailing from a post-apocalyptic future where he has already wiped out most of Earth’s great defenders, Cell managed to travel back in time to become an even stronger villain by absorbing his android siblings, 17 and 18.
On the other hand, Cell gets its name from the fact that it was built using the cells of powerful fighters like Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Frieza. This extraordinary genetic mix makes Cell nearly invincible during combat. Most surprising of all, Cell was the one who directly caused Goku’s death, a feat certainly envied by other well-known Dragon Ball antagonists. Even though Gohan ended up eliminating Cell, his appearance was so memorable that fans remember this scene as one of the most important in the series. Later this fact gave rise to impressive amounts of fan arts all over the Internet.
A creative way to pay homage to Cell
On his Instagram account, a fan named jackson casperszshare a quite original post. In it, Cell is depicted as a samurai from feudal Japan.. This artwork somehow accomplishes the very complicated task of merging Akira Toriyama’s signature style with a much more detailed and realistic touch. The details that the artist decided to add, such as the patterns on Cell’s vest or the characteristic shape of his head, like a samurai helmet, are greatly appreciated. The culmination of this surprising illustration lies in Cell’s expression of absolute sufficiency, a trait by which we could recognize him anywhere. And this look that Caspersz he added does the antagonist enough justice, since he is a warrior who could dedicate himself to killing entire armies without effort or hesitation.
Turning manga characters into ronin isn’t new to us, especially when it comes to enhancing the abilities of fan-favorite characters and even giving them powers that we’d love to see used in battle. For example, the fusion between Goku and Vegeta, named Gogeta, also received a samurai characterization courtesy of a dedicated fan. However, this colorful aspect that the Caspersz decided to give it a wonderful fit with Cell’s style. Being a character inspired by insects, Cell’s body appears to have unadorned armor, albeit with very fine finishes.
On the other hand, it is interesting that Caspersz I only had to add a few small details to Cell’s head to really make it look like the biodroid is wearing a kabuto, though the gold does help complete this fantastic look. More than anything, turning Cell into a true samurai makes him seem even more ruthless and cruel than he already was. But the reactions were immediate, because if Dragon Ball fans agree on something, it is that this work is incredible, and even a user wondered if Buu would be the next Dragon Ball villain to obtain a samurai form for part of Caspersz.
Over the years, fan tributes such as illustrations, collaborations, and cosplay are some of the purest ways fans show their love for their favorite series. This reinterpretation of Cell is fantastic not only because it’s a great piece of work on its own, but also because of the clear and obvious work done by the artist to express his admiration for the character. Cell is one of the best antagonists in Dragon Ball, and even more than thirty years after his debut, he continues to produce these wonderful creations.
