- Using blockchain technology, Buenos Aires will digitize administrative processes in the city.
- Through blockchain, the mayor plans to give his citizens full control over their information.
- This proposal is part of the plan called Buenos Aires + which consists of 12 specific objectives that make up the general objective of improving public services through technological reforms.
Horacio Rodríguez, mayor of Buenos Aires, confirmed plans to digitize administration processes taking advantage of blockchain technology. But, in addition, he hinted at the possibility of allowing residents to pay their taxes in cryptocurrencies.
This proposal is part of the plan called Buenos Aires+ which consists of 12 specific objectives that make up the general objective of improving public services through technological reforms.
In fact, a fundamental part of the agenda is “the self-sovereign digital identity, which is one of the most innovative tools that are being given in the world so that citizens have their digital identification”.
Among other documents that could be digitized in 2022 are: vaccination certificates, civil registry documents, birth certificates, among others.
“We have the clear conviction that citizens should own their information, their documents, because we trust their ability and they have the responsibility to do so”Rodríguez Larreta said during his presentation.
Road to digital identity
Wanting to digitize such sensitive and personal personal documents, the mayor explained that the plan, to be successful, required the adoption of blockchain technology.
“TAll this data flow, which is going to increase exponentially, is going to be protected by blockchain technology, the second transformation”and it is that, with the blockchain, the mayor believes that it will give citizens control over their data.
This is how, so far, the city has digitized almost 900 different procedures and, to keep pace, plans to use decentralized technologies.
On Twitter, the mayor assured that people will be able to digitally authenticate their identity. This just “through an application and they will have access, in one place, to their information, documentation and personal records, facilitating the management of their procedures, applications and permits”.
Regarding the use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for the payment of taxes, the mayor explained that “The city is not going to have crypto in public accounts, but through an agreement with virtual wallets we are going to add one more payment option to the ones we already have, with the idea of making things easier.”.
In other words, the plan is to partner with crypto wallets and payment processors to convert cryptocurrency payments to Argentine pesos immediately.
This is how the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, becomes the latest in a long list to integrate cryptocurrency solutions and Blockchain technology. In fact, in early 2022, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reported their plans to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes starting in 2023.
