Actor Simu Liu does not fall short when it comes to praising the upcoming Barbie. It’s not enough that the movie is already one of the most anticipated of this year. But now it also looks like he’ll win all the points for his diversity and the way he’s going to fight against the assumptions. Despite being one of the most conventionally stereotyped blonde and white dolls, Greta Gerwig’s film will resonate with “inner beauty.”
Simu Liu chatted with Vanity Fair about his participation in Barbie. In the midst of her enthusiasm, she did not miss the opportunity to praise the film and especially its director Greta Gerwig. In the film, the actor plays a different version of the Ken doll, which already gives us some clues about the diversity and inclusion that the film will try to show.
While we’ve barely seen a teaser trailer, no one really knows what the movie will be about. Or at least we did not know, until these moments in which the also actor of shangchi revealed a little more about the film starring Margot Robbie.
“I remember very clearly some of our big, intricate dance sequences,” Liu said. “Greta was very, very aware of who she chose. We were able to cast people of different shapes, sizes, with different abilities, to participate in this dance, all under this message of: You don’t have to be blonde, white, or X, Y, Z to embody what it means to be a Barbie or a Ken. It’s really about finding your inner beauty and owning that part of yourself and being the best version of yourself that you can be.”
Liu said he never felt isolated during the project. The actor compared the atmosphere on the set of Barbie with other shootings in which he has been. It was a production that really celebrated differences and everyone involved was pretty much on board with that idea.
“I felt like I was going to work every day with a cast that really celebrated each other and each other’s differences,” he continued. “No matter where we came from. I think, when you see the movie, you’ll see that reflected on the screen.”
Several people in the cast have already praised the script of Barbie. Simu Liu himself assured that Greta Gerwig had done something very special:
“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. I think it will surprise a lot of people because I think a lot of people get cynical when they see Mattel or Barbie. My first thought after reading it was how the hell did they get Mattel to approve this, because this is not the kind of movie corporate overlords sign up for.”
Barbie It will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
