Being a professional athlete in Mexico is complicated. After the Mexican Artistic Swimming Team He began selling swimsuits to raise funds and cover his expenses in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The businessmen Arturo Elías Ayub and Carlos Slim join in supporting the artistic swimming team of Mexico.
Led by swimmer Nuria Diosdado, the athletes began selling swimsuits due to lack of support from the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), as they wrote on social networks and mentioned in the media.
The Mexican Swimming Federation (FMN) is going through a crisis. It has resulted in the fact that affiliated athletes have not received their scholarships from Conade since December. Therefore, the athletes of their discipline do not have the tools to face the expenses towards the Olympics.
Ingenuity in the face of uncertainty
Given the situation of the FMN and the Conade, Nuria spoke about it in an interview with Azucena Uresti for Radio Formula. “It is a support that was withdrawn from the water sports teams, it was a political issue where the Conade was triangulated. As athletes we are here to train, we don’t care who is the president, we want to be given the tools“.
“Let’s fly together. In order to raise funds for our team expenses, safeti created these 2 models of swimsuits with the monarch butterfly (the theme of our team routine) that we love”, reads the publication made by the athlete on Facebook where she presented the suits that are available on the brand’s page. These have a cost of 1,000 Mexican pesos for men and 1,250 pesos for women.
“We are not selling our swimsuits, a brand, knowing that we did not have the support, approached us and we made an agreement to make the sale, because the figure is incalculable, we need to travel the 14 athletes, two coaches and at least one part doctor”, said the athlete from Guadalajara in the same interview.
Arturo Elías Ayub and Carlos Slim join the cause
Faced with this call for support, one of the first to respond was the businessman and shark from Shark Tank Mexico, Arturo Elías Ayub. In a Twitter message, Nuria and the shark shared that they met and that they were “ready to jump in the water with you, the highest ranked sports team in this country.” The businessman’s action was applauded on social networks.
Subsequently, the richest man in Mexico and Latin America, Carlos Slim, received the entire artistic swimming team and assured them of giving them the impetus to achieve their goals.
Nuria made it known in her accounts and wrote: “There are no words to thank the reception that Eng. #CarlosSlim and @arturoelias gave to @artswimmexico. Thank you for your time, words, and drive to move forward with our goals. An honor to have been with you”, wrote the athlete.
However, no details have yet been given as to how the support will be done specifically. But, Nuria, the captain has appreciated the gesture of approach. So, we hope it’s very positive.
