doing this Isonzo WW1 analysis I have come across a product that, due to its proposal, is quite curious. It is a multiplayer game that explores one of the most interesting scenarios of the first world war in the history of wars. This is a game for those who like war stories, a game that takes place in the valley of the Isonzo river, which includes the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungary Empire.
This area is remembered for being the scene where 12 consecutive battles took place between 1915 and 1917. These battles are remembered because they were clashes in which there were enormous casualties, since the geographical conditions and the way in which the Austro-Hungarian troops were stationed on the Alps prevented the successful advance of the Italian army towards the border through the Isonzo valley. And this is the scenario that is developed in Isonzo WW1.
Isonzo WW1 have a different style of gameplay than most modern FPS. It’s a more true-to-story game, and this means weapons are imprecise and clunky, you’re always more limited in firing or loading, and a single bullet can kill instantly. Players have to take everything much more seriously. Bullets are constantly fired, various toxic and deadly gases are released, and every decision counts.

the gameplay
Isonzo is a multiplayer of forty simultaneous players who face each other between two sides to gain control of a huge map. It works by taking over zones that go from small spawn points that give your army more chances of having control of the bases, which are the ones that will finally give you victory. The maps you play on are really big but at the same time well designed to guarantee matchups.
However, I have to say that the maps become too huge. One can take approximately 30 minutes to go through one. This is relevant in relation to the long duration that a game can have. Something that can be a great barrier for those who expect fun with less commitment. In fact, I generally feel that Isonzo WW1 belongs to that class of games that are not for everyone.
The game currently comes with 3 offenses and is built around attacking/defending points across a vast map. As in many FPS, the attacking force has a limited number of soldiers. The defensive force has an unlimited number of soldiers, but they must fight wisely. And no, it’s not unbalanced. In fact, it feels that in this sense the game works quite well, a balance of forces where whoever has the best strategy wins.
During the preview there was only one offense where you played mostly bots, but once the game was released, there is a large supply of games with different player population levels. Some maps are even completely filled with players. this changes quite a bit the experience becomes more intense and violent. Also the idea of squad work works very well.
The classes
Isonzo WW1 offers you a scenario of the first realistic world war where you will have to play a role. This role is represented in 6 classes, each with its advantages and disadvantages, kits and weapons specific to each class. Also, you will be able to unlock more weapons as you play. Each of the classes is important. They all bring something special to the battle. And it also happens that you will not be able to choose any class. Some will have a maximum player limit in a match.
The classes in question are the officer class, which can initiate various support tactics to help its side. is also the rifleman who is the standard soldier, of which there can be as many as you want. The engineer is used to build turrets, cut barbed wire better and help build obstacles. Stormtroopers focus on effective counterattacks with high-impact weaponry. Mountaineers excel when it comes to infiltrating and scouting enemy positions. And finally the snipers of the group.
Each of these classes has challenges to complete and a progression meter to fill.. More weapons are unlocked by playing a class and account level, so getting new weapons for combat isn’t too difficult. And the advantages that you will find instead are quite interesting. Among the options that the classes have, I can say that the officers stand out for their offensive options despite their limited weapons.
While these come equipped with only a pistol that is rarely as deadly as other weapons, officers have access to drop bombs and release various types of deadly gases such as mustard gas. And while all soldiers have masks that can be equipped, these not only won’t make you immune, they will decrease your vision.
Is so much realism good?
The idea of realism is always present when thinking about video games and it has its positive and negative sides. In a game like Isonzo WW1 the idea is to recreate the historical circumstances surrounding the 12 battles of Isonzo. And in many respects the game succeeds. You feel completely unprotected on a gigantic map where you don’t know which side you’re going to be attacked from and where you’re going to die from a single shot that can come from anywhere.
That feeling has something special. It makes you think of war and how disposable life is in those circumstances where each soldier is only worth a means to reach an end and his life fulfills a function, which is often going to die and that his body is piled up next to the others. Well, Isonzo WW1 makes you experience this. On the other hand, the uniforms of both factions in Isonzo were very neat. Even the buttons seemed historically accurate. Although I am not an expert on the subject.

The mountains, the towns, the dead horses that you find, the trenches that you cross all over the map, the dangerous plains, it all became quite fantastic to watch, albeit with some issues like loading textures, or the fact that from a distance it seemed to lose resolution sometimes. As for the sound there are some positive and other negative points. There is a single song that plays all the time and that is really good, although some might ask for more variety.
The way the weapons sound is something I liked. How they sound and how they look is incredible. Also the sound effects in general of explosions and fire. The voices and cries of the soldiers sounded very good except when they died. many times you hear some screams and wails that feel out of place because in addition to being louder, you don’t see anyone moving or twisting as they die. Just bodies scattered on the ground.
Isonzo WW1 Analysis Conclusion
Isonzo is a multiplayer with a solid proposal that carries some problems. Regarding its realism, the beauty of its landscapes, the wildness of its confrontations, you have a game that can give you a lot. It’s definitely something different, but that’s also why it seems like it should be considered a niche game, which isn’t surprising considering its creators and previous games. If you find the way and discover the way to find yourself on the battlefield, you can greatly enjoy Isonzo WW1.
The other thing is that this game is a must see if you are a fan of history of wars, and of the games that recreate the historical conditions of these. I think the main issues with the game, apart from some technical issues like heavy textures or horrible, screeching death screams that sound out of tune, have to do with the design of its offenses. In my opinion, these confrontations can last longer than fair.
That means you’ll spend more time than feels necessary for a match to be over. Another problem is that in the end we have few offensives of the war itself, only three in total. What can be fixed with future updates that have already been said to be free. A minor thing, due to its lack of relevance, is that in addition to having limited cosmetics to customize your soldier, most of these are only available for the most expensive edition of the game.
And finally, the fact that the game is only in english I think it will be a barrier in general for many, because although there is little to read, the menus and options may not be understood.
