for months Netflix has battled accusations of forced inclusion, but this time a lawyer has decided to take action on the matter. Egyptian lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary filed a complaint with the Public Ministry against the streaming giant for the film “Queen Cleopatra”.
The film, which is presented as a documentary, shows the historic queen of the Nile as a black woman, a representation that has caused furor in networks and outrage in Egypt. The reason? They argue that Cleopatra was ethnically Greek and Macedonian, that is, a white woman.
Cleopatra was white, lawsuit claims
The lawsuit against Netflix says the film, produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, presents a “historically inaccurate and offensive portrayal of the Egyptian people.”
According to the medium Egypt IndependentMahmoud al-Semary demands that “all measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary” and the platform for this cultural appropriation.
On social networks, especially on TikTok, the conversation on the subject has been opened. They point out that the Netflix Cleopatra movie promotes misunderstood Afrocentrism by appropriating a figure that was not black and deliberately forgetting other great Egyptian queens who were of that race like the legendary nefertiti.
