Until now, the role of the armed forces in tourism had been maintained in the area of security through different operations, but in this administration Sedena and the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) have assumed control of more and more infrastructure, which, beyond the star works of the six-year term, will extend to the operation of air services and even maritime transport in tourist destinations.
The president announced in February the creation of Olmec Mayan Mexica, a company in charge of the armed forces for the administration of the mega-projects of its government.
López Obrador confirmed in his conference that this company will be in charge of operating the Mayan Train and the Felipe Ángeles, Tulum, Chetumal and “perhaps one or two more” airports, in addition to the new airline.
The president stressed that the construction of a new airport in Tulum will allow the saturated Cancun airport, which today is “the most important tourist airport” in the country, to be relieved.
