- According to Reuters reports, Amazon Web Services is considering a new strategy to remove “violent” content from its server.
- An Amazon spokesperson has denied the information, but, according to Reuters and some of its sources that it described as “reliable”, it is very likely that it will be carried out.
- Days ago, Amazon has already started deleting some pages that are promoting violent content
As part of a strategy to maintain control of its content, Amazon’s cloud service, Amazon Web Services, will begin to erase those pages that it considers to be “violent.”
The rise of digital platforms brought with it a new modality for news sites, personal blogs, among others, where practically all kinds of information can be uploaded, even when it is not entirely real and / or reliable.
This has given rise to an endless number of contents that are usually classified as “violent” or “fake news”, a situation that has become more evident since the arrival of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, forcing social networks like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and even Reddit, to take action against these practices.
Of course, the increase in this type of publications and / or web pages has a great impact on the way in which users interact, a reason that is drawing the attention of the authorities, who are already demanding that more energetic measures be adopted against it.
As we mentioned, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Reddit, among others, are working on measures such as blocking or eliminating content that could threaten the integrity of Internet users. Contents, mainly, of fake news about the pandemic, Covid-19, vaccines, etc.
According to a report by ReutersNow, Amazon Web Services is joining, the Amazon cloud service, which will begin to eliminate pages from its server that it considers violent.
To do this, over the next few months, Jeff Bezos’ company will hire a group of people in order to monitor the content that is uploaded to the server and, if any of them do not comply with its new content policies, proceed to eliminate them.
According to what Reuters reports, an Amazon spokesperson denied the news, although, through other reliable sources, everything indicates that this practice of Amazon Web Services will take place, which, taking into account the great influence of Amazon, could grant the power to decide on which content is uploaded and which is not on the internet.
Previously, Amazon deleted a website on which there was propaganda of the Islamic State and which also celebrated the recent attack in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, where 13 American soldiers lost their lives.
On the other hand, Amazon Web Services no longer allows content that encourages sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as other types of threats, to be hosted on its servers.
Although a strict measure is required against this series of content that can be hosted indiscriminately on the network and reach millions of users, the truth is that, if this Amazon proposal is carried out, any content that is cataloged by the platform as “violent” would be removed. In that sense, the question here would be: What is “violent” for Amazon?
The idea, from the outset, can be thought of as necessary in a context where this type of information sneaks into the network very easily, but it could also lead to a form of censorship.
So far this has not been confirmed but, according to Reuters, it is a fact. We will see if this happens and, above all, what effects it generates among the community.
