In almost ten years, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s opinion on superheroes has not been positive. It happened in 2014 when the Mexican filmmaker attacked forcefully against movies of masked vigilantes through his birdman —a very critical film about it that would eventually win the Oscar— and a controversial statement that this type of mega-productions constitutes “cultural genocide.”
On the other hand, just this week another comment by Iñárritu came to light where he questions how much we need people with capes when, from his perspective, heroism abounds in our daily lives.
A few days ago, at a social event organized for the 2023 BAFTAs in Beverly Hills, Variety had the opportunity to talk with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who during the talk emphasized that directing a superhero movie is still a remote possibility for him, if not non-existent.
To begin with, the winning director at Cannes pointed out that these characters – today better used by Marvel Studios – are actually “sad figures”. He prefers to skip the “super” and give all his attention to the heroes that he sees around him daily in the plane of reality.
“I see heroes every day. I see beautiful people who go through very difficult situations and do amazing things. And those are the people I connect with. But do we really need these kinds of heroes with superpowers?” Iñárritu wondered.
In his eyes, it is enough to “admire what we have, the possibilities we have”, instead of being seduced by a Captain America or a Thor that concern only the field of fiction. What do you think?

In any case, despite having its detractors, a superhero franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is still very much in force and with plans to stay on the billboard for many more years. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently explained how important it is for his company to continue bringing fresh stories that are not pigeonholed in the same type of movie or series. In this way, the executive is confident that the MCU will never cause fatigue in the public and will continue to be relevant within two decades or more.
Meanwhile, Iñárritu has his sights set on the 2023 Oscars, where his latest film, Bard, false chronicle of a few truths, aspires to obtain the statuette for Best Photography. come in HERE to see the full list of nominees.
Antonio G. Spindola I have very bad memory. Out of solidarity with my memories, I choose to lose myself too. Preferably in a movie theater.
