- Following recent protests against Twitch, users left the platform
- Gamesight reported a significant decline in Twitch users on the day of the #ADayOffTwitch protest.
- A few days ago, the news broke that one of the most popular streamers on Twitch signed an exclusive contract with YouTube Gaming
The protests against Twitch made yesterday are wreaking havoc on the platform, as some users are withdrawing.
Just when it seemed that Amazon’s platform, Twitch, was about to take that big leap and start a new era as a platform for streamers, moments occur that leave the application in a bad way.
The pandemic had represented an important period for Twitch in terms of the increase in its users and its content creators, this also due to the growth of the video game industry that came hand in hand with the confinement we underwent last year.
The compulsory confinement, forced – worth the redundancy -, people to look for entertainment alternatives, to spend time away from the news about infections, deaths and erroneous data about Covid-19.
Of the range of platforms that took advantage of this space to increase their popularity, there is Twtich, the platform that last weekend scored a great success by broadcasting the debut of Lionel Messi as a new player of Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (PSG) , that placed Twitch as one of the big winners of that event.
However, not all is good news for the platform, since yesterday one of the most striking virtual protests of these digital times took place.
An important group of streamers decided to take a day off from Twitch and the hashtag #ADayOffTwitch was placed in the main trends of Twitter.
The virtual strike was also criticized on social networks, because for many Internet users this did not represent any danger for Twitch, but, according to “other data” published by Gamesight, a video game analytics company, reveal the effect the protests had on the Amazon app.
As recorded by Gamesight, active channels and viewer hours at 12pm on September 1 was the lowest compared to last week,
At noon yesterday, the number of hours of viewer / hours of viewing was 3 million 456 thousand 576, while the active channels in that same period was 171 thousand 682. In previous days, higher amounts were registered both items, such as as shown in the following graph:
But, aside from that, that is not the only reason why some users are abandoning Twitch, although it is clear that the virtual protest had a lot to do with this process.
A few days ago, one of the most popular streamers on Twitch, DrLupo, signed an exclusive contract with YouTube Gaming, a case similar to other streamers also on Twitch who decided to go with the competition.
And, in addition, Twitch seems not to be doing everything possible to retain its creators; remember that recently announced a reduction of up to 50 percent in its monthly subscription plans. This, evidently, raised the alarms in the community of streamers of the application since it would diminish its entrance of income.
Likewise, the cases of harassment against streamers have made the image of Twitch not the best and, in fact, that was the necessary impetus for the virtual strike to take place that, as we saw, did affect the platform.
These are certainly tough times for Twitch at a time when a truly important rally seemed to be beginning; the number of its subscribers increased, brands began to turn more to this content platform and it seemed that an important moment was coming for the Amazon app. We will see how this situation is resolved in order to regain control.
