Apple did everything to hide the design of the original iPod!
Every anniversary of the iPod is a good time to share curious details about its creation process. And, no tribute is small when it comes to remembering the device that “saved” Apple. But beyond the decisions of Steve Jobs, or those of the engineers behind development like Tony Fadell, on this twentieth birthday, he has surprised us with the publication of a prototype of the first iPod.
Through the blog Panic, Cabel Sasser has shared exclusive images of an extremely never-before-seen iPod prototype. The rare prototype is yellow and quite large compared to the original iPod., which Steve Jobs introduced on October 23, 2021, even though it belongs to the end of the product development cycle. This iPod prototype is dated September 3, 2001*.
This is what the secret prototype of the iPod looked like
Regarding the publication, “the father of the iPod”, Tony Fadell, confirmed from his Twitter account that this it was called “P68 / Dulcimer” and was specifically designed to hide the final iPod design from prying eyes.
This is a P68 / Dulcimer iPod prototype we (very quickly) made before the true form factor design was ready. Didn’t want it look like an iPod for confidentiality – the buttons placement, the size – it was mostly air inside – and the wheel worked (poorly) https://t.co/qeNMHMmVsc

As Cabel describes in his post, the prototype runs the iPod-exclusive software and even features a small scroll wheel in the upper-left corner next to the screen. In addition, has some touch buttons arranged vertically on the right side of the device, as well as FireWire ports and a standard headphone port, than the original iPod.
Unlike the original, the display on this one is quite small compared to the rest of the yellowish case. Regarding the color that can be seen in the images, it is not known whether it corresponds to the original tone, or has deteriorated over the years.
