The fire started at 10:20 p.m. (0420 GMT on Wednesday) and, around midnight, Pemex firefighters managed to control it. State and municipal Civil Protection personnel arrived at the place to support the work, said the secretariat.
Both the oil company and the Veracruz State Civil Protection Secretariat indicated that the fire was controlled, and Pemex added that it will proceed with an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident.
Images on social networks showed large columns of fire devouring part of the facilities. Reuters could not independently confirm the veracity of the images.
Known as Minatitlán, after the city of the same name where it is located, the plant is Pemex’s third largest refinery, with a capacity to process 285,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude. At the moment it was not possible to know if the incident affected production.
In February, two people died and three were hospitalized after a fire at the same Pemex plant.
