The first trailer of Spider-Man: No Way Home broke the internet, there is no doubt about that. Although the advance has left us with certainty, it is also true that some questions that surround the film are still pending answer. Obviously, we weren’t expecting the trailer to solve everything. However, there is a question that has sparked all kinds of theories in the last few hours: How the hell is Doctor Octopus resurrected?
The confirmed appearance of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus has made us think, perhaps wrongly, that we are dealing with the same character from Spider-man 2. This, in turn, leads to the question we asked earlier. Although there are quite interesting theories about how the villain could return from the dead, and even some that suggest that he never died, the reality is that our intuitions could be too far apart of what will actually happen in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The key to everything, of course, is the Multiverse. In the first trailer of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange makes mention of this concept and the little knowledge that is had about it. It is not necessary to break your head to know that the appearance of villains from other universes is entirely linked to this “phenomenon”. So, with the enormous creative freedom that the Multiverse gives you, no need to resurrect characters.
Except surprise, it is quite possible that Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man: No Way Home be a variant of the 2004 villain. In other words, a different version that lives in another universe and does not yet know death. This same idea can be applied with the Green Goblin by Willem Dafoe and the Electro of Jamie Foxx, as both antagonists died in the universes explored in Spider-man and The Amazing Spider-Man, respectively.
The above, of course, also opens the door to alternate versions of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. Although, to be honest, the fact of staying alive in their respective universes makes it easier for them to appear in other realities. It will be very interesting to see how Marvel explains a subject that a priori seems complex. Of course, the first steps have already been taken from Loki. Spider-Man: No Way Home the December 17, 2021, and it will be from that day when we resolve our doubts about Doctor Octopus and the rest of the characters.
