After wowing the world with parasite, bong joon-ho is ready to steal, again, the spotlight of the film industry with his new movie. Mickey 17, as they have titled the film, is one of Warner Bros.’s biggest bets for its near future. After multiple rumors, the producer finally confirmed that Mickey 17 will be released on March 29, 2024; Assuming no unexpected obstacles arise along the way…
What is it about Mickey 17? well it is based on the science fiction novel mickey7written by Edward Ashton and whose release is scheduled for February 2023. Obviously, Bong Joon-ho had access to the literary work before the rest of the mortals, which allowed him to create the adapted script.
“mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the frozen world of Niflheim. Whenever a mission too dangerous, even suicidal, arises, the crew turns to Mickey. After he dies one iteration, he regenerates a new body with most of his memories of him intact,” the book’s description begins.
The interesting thing comes when, in an apparent routine activity, the protagonist disappears and is left for dead. But no one counted on that this iteration of Mickey—the seventh, hence the name—had survived. Returning to his colony, he discovers that a new clone has taken his place.
Mickey7, then, faces a complex situation, since the existence of duplicate Expendables is universally repudiated. When this happens, the clone is recycled “into proteins to feed a starving colony.”
The narrative certainly holds promise, especially for science fiction fans. Warner Bros. not only signed Robert Pattinson —who will be Mickey—, but also Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Toni Collette (hereditary) Y Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame).
Mickey 17 will be directed, written and produced by Bong Joon-ho, so much of the project falls on his shoulders. In fact, in the past there were already rumors that the South Korean will have complete creative freedom to alter the story of the novel if he sees fit. The fact that Mickey’s iteration number is different may be strong proof of that.
It is important to mention that Mickey 17 still in production process. Considering what has happened to other major films in recent years, it’s best to take the date with a grain of salt. The reality is that the calendar of the film industry is subject to multiple factors that could alter the plans of the companies without prior notice.
Warner is also going through a series of significant changes. Fortunately, the new from the acclaimed Bong Joon-ho remained oblivious to all those movements. It is evident that Warner fully trusts the South Korean filmmaker and, of course, in the interpretation of Robert Pattinson. The duo was announced earlier this year and now we see the first fruits of their long-awaited collaboration.
