Vulcan’s instability has made him an easy target for the X-Men’s enemies.
Many conclusions have been drawn about Gabriel Summersalso known as Vulcano (or, the brother of Cyclops), but if they can all agree on something, it is that he is the most powerful member of the Summers family. And what’s worse, he also happens to be the most dangerous thanks to his explosive combination of mutant abilities and enough of a mental imbalance to pose a threat to the world of the X-Men.
Gabriel Summers had a rather peculiar history since his introduction to the comics, when he was removed from his mother’s body and placed in an incubation accelerator, which led him to rapidly develop into adolescence. Yet all that time lived under slave status for the Shi’ar Empire. This mutant was sent to Earth to be the slave of Davan Shakari, although he managed to escape and, after being found by Moria MacTaggart, since then belonged to the second team of the X-Men, with the mission of rescuing the founders of the living island Krakoa.
Gabriel, considered to be higher than the Omega level, failed in the task and was imprisoned on the island for years. Although he later discovered that Professor Xavier had been in charge of erasing the memory of all those who belonged to the team. However, the mutant took revenge on the Shi’arr and basically, after stealing the throne, named himself Emperor. But the only thing he managed to achieve was to cause a war between the Inhumans and the Shi’Ar in the galaxy.
Unsurprisingly, this conflict did not go well and Vulcan was apparently killed. Of course, Gabriel resurfaced from this dark time once the X-Men founded the mutant nation of Krakoa. The change in the character had been radical, since he had supposedly become a better man … although deep down he was hiding a horrible secret.
If you were wondering how it was possible for Vulcan to revive after this traumatic episode, the Many-Angled-Ones (beings that come from Lovecraftian mythology that embraces evil and greed) took it upon themselves to bring him back for their evil plans in the Marvel Universe.
What are the powers of Vulcan?
We have already mentioned that the mutant has incredible abilities, but what are they for other beings to use to conquer the world? First of all, it was shown in X-Men Red #3 (issue by Al sewing, Stefano Caselli, Federico Blee and Fernando Sifuentes) that Vulcan’s powers allowed him to absorb and manipulate inordinate amounts of energy. But now they have a new mode at their disposal: is able to disable any gift possessed by a mutant. In other words, since it is pure energy, it can drain its opponent to strip them of their powers.
For example, when Vulcan quickly fought Storm, in the predecessor issue of X-Men Red, the mutant was still unaware of this ability. So after the fight, Vulcan failed precisely because his opponent had the same ability, a fact that turned the event into an exchange of fists. Although against anyone who faces Vulcan he would have many reasons to fear, since he becomes practically invincible by absorbing the other’s powers. And while he may sound dangerous enough on its own, this power is not the reason he poses a threat to Krakoa and Arrako.
Well, here is the explanation. Although the mutant used these incredible powers to help the X-Men in their goal of transforming Mars to make it home to the mutants of Arrako. Unfortunately, Vulcan’s mental health has been in decline ever since.. During the Mars mission, Gabriel became an adept of Abigail Brand (a traitor to mutants, known to secretly work for Orchis, in conjunction with the organization that seeks to wipe out mutants). But Brand’s motives for working with Gabriel stem from using him as a key tool in his rise to power on Arrako.. In fact, this caused him to challenge Tarn. And, worse yet, Vulcan’s mind is under the command of the Many-angled-Ones, but he doesn’t know it.
Finally, the mutant still seeks to rule the Shi’ar Empire, something that has caused enough diplomatic tension to lead to a cosmic war that would involve the X-Men. However, it is possible that Vulcan will return more unhinged than ever, after being resurrected on Krakoa, which could motivate the mutant to snatch the powers of his rivals and cause an imbalance terrible for what the team has built.
