Over the years we have seen some companies opt for their own manufacturing of processors. This is something that currently only some manufacturers can do, as an incredible sales volume and a lot of infrastructure is necessary to carry out the research and final development. Companies like Samsung and Huawei lead this initiative that makes some difficult to think. Today we have news about a new company that is thinking of making its own processors. This is Oppo, the Chinese giant that now also sells devices in Europe and the rest of the world.
Deciding to make your own chips has many advantages, but doing it correctly and viable is a long and tedious process. Companies invest millions of dollars in the research and development of these processors, which later may not be welcomed by the global market. Still, it seems that Oppo is willing to risk and launch its own processors.
Oppo wants more control when it comes to manufacturing its mobiles
Having your own processors can be a great advantage for the company itself and also for the users. It is not the same to adapt a device to the Qualcomm processor on duty than to manufacture a processor specifically for the mobile that you want to market. This makes the synergies between the processor and the rest of the device much more interesting.
Huawei and Samsung are two companies that may be happy to make the leap a few years ago. Even high-end products currently lack Qualcomm chips in most models and markets.
We know that Oppo wants to manufacture its own chips through an internal filtered report . This report dedicated to Oppo employees talks about the ‘ Mariana Plan ‘, a project that has been approved by the Oppo TMG Technical Committee . Chan Yen leads this committee and is head of the Oppo chip department. Finally, we also know that this person worked as a Qualcomm Technical Director.
OnePlus and really in the spotlight of the possible change
If Oppo finally manages to manufacture its own processors and sell smartphones with them inside, there could also be changes in other companies. It is well known that OnePlus and realme are Oppo’s sister companies and it has been confirmed that they are included in the Oppo TMG committee.
This allows us to speculate on the possibility of seeing changes in the processors not only of Oppo, but also of realme or OnePlus. Of course, for now, it is news that is not 100% confirmed and a project that can take a long time to be viable. Oppo may not have its own processors until the end of 2021 or 2022.
