In the book, “Essential Questions” Authors Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins explore the difference between essential and non-essential questions. His research resulted in the 7 characteristics of good essential questions:
- The essential questionss are open and they do not have a unique, final and correct answer.
- essential questions invite reflection and they are intellectually attractive. They also promote discussion and debate.
- Essential Questions require a higher Order Thinking, such as analysis, inference, evaluation, and prediction. They cannot be answered effectively by memory alone.
- Essential questions point to ideas important and transferable within the disciplines.
- The essential questions ask additional questions and provoke more inquiries.
- The essential questions require support and justification, not just an answer.
