Life is a huge challenge that we all face but there are also other more specific ones. In your case, it is about your medical career and within which there are many adversities to face. To get ahead, the ideal is to have goals. Although it sounds quite simple, in reality it is not entirely so because sometimes it is not clear what you want or how you aspire to achieve it.
Setting both personal and professional goals will help you create structure and a path to success. While at the opposite point, if you do not have well defined what you want then you can be relegated to stagnation.
With the above in mind, Luis Vidrio, sales director for Indeed in Mexico, shares five useful tips for setting goals within a medical career. The goal is to make each one easier in the end so that you can thrive in your medical career.
While there are different ways to set goals, there are a few steps you can take to ensure the best chance of success. Your goals must have five key elements to be achievable. These five elements make up what is known as a smart goal (SMART), which stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based.
It must be clear and detailed
For example, instead of setting very general and unclear goals like “I want to be better public speaking,” you can be much more specific and say, “I want to give a 10-15 minute presentation to an audience of 50 or more people.” .
Define how you are going to measure success
For example, if you want to change jobs, you can set milestones along the way that cover how to develop the skills and experience you need to fill the position you want. To do this you can set your measurement as learning and focus on one skill per month.
Check if your goals are achievable
Setting goals that you can accomplish within a reasonable amount of time will help you stay motivated and focused. You should work to understand in advance the full scope of your objectives and make sure that it is possible to achieve it.
If you find that a goal is not achievable because you don’t have enough experience, one of your new goals should be to gain more experience.
Make sure your goal is relevant
You must set goals that align with your values and contribute to your long-term goals. Every goal you set should be relevant and meaningful to you, getting you closer to where you want to be. To make sure you are setting relevant goals, you can ask yourself: “How will achieving this goal help me?”, “Does achieving this goal contribute to my most important long-term goals? Why is this goal important to me? “
Set a start and end date
Creating a timeline to achieve your goal can help keep you motivated and on schedule. Before setting an end date for the goal, be sure to research all the milestones and potential obstacles you may encounter along the way. For example, if your goal is to promote positions within a hospital, you could give yourself a specific time. If after the established date you have not achieved them, you can give yourself more time or reconsider if your goal is achievable and realistic.
