El Periódico Extremadura was criticized for sharing an interview where it is claimed that you can have 5 restaurants in your 20s.
This sparked a discussion among users about who supports the culture of meritocracy and who doesn’t.
Independent journalist Dani Domínguez from La Marea was the one who led this discussion on Twitter.
The Spanish journalist Daniel Domínguez harshly criticized an article in El Periódico Extremadura for disseminating in an “erroneous” way the idea that it is possible to open 5 restaurants in your 20s.
This fact has sparked a discussion among his followers on Twitter, both by those who are in favor of culture of meritocracy as well as by those who consider that it is a mirage that makes everyone believe that they can achieve the same as those in privileged positions.
The culture of meritocracy
The culture of meritocracy refers to the model of government of the “winners” or the “deservers”. The portal of the Royal Spanish Academy defines this concept as a “government system in which positions of responsibility are awarded based on personal merit.
According to this model, apparently whoever has done enough merit to get a prominent position, open a successful business or deserve an honor, has been completely thanks to their effort and work.
However, as mentioned on some occasion by the renowned intellectual of Harvard, Michael Sendelmeritocracy is for many, ideally, a model in which “everyone should enjoy the same opportunities, which in theory would guarantee that those who reach the top would have achieved success by their own methods”.
But this could not be further from reality, because according to the academic, there are two central conflicts that deny this assertion: the first is that in reality, no society is up to the meritocratic ideals that are professed, so it is impossible for opportunities to be the same for everyone; Secondly, there are those who, holding the flag of meritocracy, ignore the fact that they received a privileged education due to the great monetary capacity of their parents.
For this reason, as a result of a publication shared by a Spanish journalist in which he harshly criticized the content of a note from The Extremadura Newspaperalso Iberian, the discussion on the subject was immediate in networks.
Have 5 restaurants in your 20s? Extremadura says it is possible and in networks they criticize the medium
The Spanish medium was hit hard in networks by a journalist named Daniel Domínguez for having shared a misconception through one of your notes. It tells the story of a group of young people who claimed to have achieved open 5 restaurants while in his 20s. This fact unleashed the journalist’s anger, since he assures that it is impossible for everyone to cry and pointed out that it is a deception towards the readers.
“Seriously, you can’t convince anyone that you’ve set up two restaurants in the center of Cáceres from scratch. It’s tricking people into thinking anyone can do it. And it is not true”.
He pointed out that he was particularly annoyed by the phrase “who does not risk does not win”, since this translates into ignorance of the system of opportunities of social classes, where while for many “taking risks” would mean investing with the money that their parents have given them , for others it could represent the risk of losing everything. This was the last thing he added to the conversation: “The economic position of your parents marks your life. To ignore that in an article is to deceive the reader”.

These were some of the comments received by the journalist:
Between 23 and 27 years old. They have opened 5 restaurants in 2 years. I only see 4 people who have killed themselves while working. If envy were gold, Spain would be covered in gold.
To undertake you do not need money, but attitude. Many people with money have failed, and others with nothing in their pockets have worked hard and have succeeded. Mediocre is the one who does not try, or who believes he needs someone’s tickets to be able to undertake.
As Mr. Reynholm used to say: “When I started at Reynholm inc. I only had two things, a dream and 6 million pounds “
