Crimes against women in Mexico continue to increase and already represent 33% of the 905,124 crimes committed in the country between January and May 2023, Intentional injuries stand out as the antisocial behavior that most affects this sector.
According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, of all the crimes registered in the first five months of the year, 157,285 victims have been identified, and of these 52,432 are women, that is, out of every 10 affected who have suffered some illicit three are Mexican.
In turn, of the 52,432 women victims, more than half (28,942) were the object of intentional injuries, which are those that are committed on purpose or with the intention of harming the physical integrity of the woman.
The official information also reveals that 1,085 women were victims of intentional homicide and another 356 of femicide, which implies a total of 1,441 Mexican women who lost their lives in the 151 days between January and May, giving an average of 9 murders of women per day.
To these data must be added that 9,689 women were victims of wrongful injuriesa crime that is executed without the intention of causing any affectation and that represents 18.48% of the total number of female victims.
Another important crime that women in our country also suffer is extortion, with 1,562 victims until May, an average of 10 extortions per day, while the report of the National Public Security System details that 2,086 women, 3.98% of the 52,432 victims of some crime, they suffered “other crimes that threaten life and bodily integrity.”
With this we can affirm that the main crimes that affect Mexican women are, in order of importance: intentional injuries, culpable injuries, other crimes against life and bodily integrity, extortion, homicide and femicides.
Criminogenic entities
The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System details that, between January and May of this year, the five entities in the country where the most intentional homicides against women were committed are:
- Guanajuato (163);
- State of Mexico (133);
- Lower California (91);
- chihuahuas (87)
- and Jalisco (73)
Regarding intentional injuries, the states with the highest incidence of this crime, whose victims are women, were:
- State of Mexico with 6,354 cases;
- Guanajuato (3,288);
- Michoacan (1,904);
- Jalisco (1,614)
- and Nuevo León (1,259).
However, if the number of female inhabitants by federal entity is considered, in Campeche 143 Mexican women out of every 100,000 who live in that demarcation suffered intentional injuries; They are followed by Guanajuato, Michoacán, Baja California Sur and the State of Mexico.
This means that in these latter entities it is more likely that a woman is the victim of intentional injuries, which tells us about a social conflict that is being resolved through intentional aggression against women.
In turn, although there are more women victims of extortion in the State of Mexico, Veracruz, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Nuevo León, the figures are modified when the incidence of this crime per 100,000 women is analyzed, placing Baja California in first place. South. They are followed by the State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Nuevo León and Colima, entities that in population terms register more extortions committed against women.
The consulted report also gives an account of a 7.6% increase in domestic violence. Between January and May 2022, this crime totaled 110,131 records, while in the same period of 2023, 118,543 acts of family violence were reported, which, in this case, affects both men and women.
The entities in which more crimes of intrafamily violence are reported are Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Jalisco and Guanajuato; but for every 100,000 inhabitants (men and women) Colima is the first state in the incidence of this crime; Mexico City is in second place, following Coahuila, Quintana Roo and Nuevo León.
