“Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the US Open,” said the Twitter account of the promoters of the fourth and last Grand Slam of the season.
Finalist in Flushing-Meadows against Austrian Dominic Thiem in 2020 and semi-finalist last year, Zverev suffered an injury in the semifinals of Roland Garros in early June against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
The 25-year-old German, Olympic champion in Tokyo in August 2021, had to undergo surgery for tearing three lateral ligaments in his right ankle.
This injury already deprived him of participating in Wimbledon (June 27 – July 10), ending a streak of 27 consecutive appearances in Grand Slam tournaments since 2015.
For his part, Serbian Novak Djokovic, current N.6 in the ATP ranking and finalist last year at the US Open, is also not guaranteed his participation in the New York tournament, because he still has not been vaccinated against Covid.
