Given the controversy created around some alleged statements about a rejection of Zoë Kravitz in a casting for The Dark Knight Rises, the new interpreter of Catwoman clarifies the situation
The Batman is the reboot of the Bat Man franchise on the big screen, and with it Selina Kyle / Catwoman returns to the cinema, after her last appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, now with Zoë Kravitz as the interpreter of the woman who has stolen ( among other things) Batman’s heart.

Before Kravitz, actresses such as Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns and Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises have played the sensual and intriguing Catwoman.
In an interview for The Guardian newspaper, Zoë Kravitz recounted an experience she had when she auditioned for a role in The Dark Knight Rises, which she did not get.
“I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan. I think it was probably a casting director of some sort, or a casting director’s assistant… Being a woman of color and being an actress and being told at the time that I couldn’t ‘read’ because of the color of my skin, and the word urban thrown that way, that was the really difficult part of that moment”.”.
Unfortunately, Kravitz’s words were taken out of context and various media pointed out that the actress sought to become Catwoman, but her dark complexion prevented her from keeping the role.
Zoë Kravitz clarifies her words
After a few days in which various media outlets began a controversy in which they accused Christopher Nolan’s production of being racist, Zoë Kravitz herself shared a statement in her Instagram stories clarifying the words she said to The Guardian.
“Ok, let’s talk about bad journalism and clickbait
I was NOT told I was too urban to play Catwoman in ‘Dark Knight’ [Rises]’. It would NOT have made sense to me to be considered for that role at that time. I wanted to AUDIT for a small part in the movie and was told (I don’t know who said this, but that’s how they told me) that they weren’t going to be “urban” in the part. This is something I heard a lot about 10 years ago, it was a very different time.
I didn’t bring this up to point fingers or make anyone seem racist, i.e. Chris Nolan, the film’s producers, or anyone on the casting team, because I really don’t think anyone meant any harm. I was just setting an example of what it was like to be a woman of color in this industry at the time. Again, this was many years ago when words like that were thrown around very casually and while I’m really glad we’re trying to evolve, let’s calm down and check the facts before writing things that aren’t true.”
